arctic cooler on 9800 pro - 2d artifacts

    lo all.

I know that some of you have the arctic coolers on your 9800 pro boards. I stuck mine on yesterday. 3d works like a charm, but 2d is a mess. I have artifacts all over the place.

To try to rectify the problem I installed new drivers, took the cooler off, cleaned off excess thermal paste with alcohol, reapplied the cooler and rebooted. No joy. Interestingly, the artifacts always appear in the same place which is weird.

Anyone come across anything like this before?

I ran ATI Tool for two hours. Zero artifacts at stock.

All help /greatly/ appreciated. My gfx card is my baby. :)

I should mention that there were no artifacts before I took off the stock cooler...... I'm just hoping that I didn't break anything.

doesn't ati tool support different profiles for 3d and 2d. Why not run at stock for 2d, and oc for 3d

I'm running at stock for both. Tried underclocking with ATI Tool. No joy.

Seriously considering wiping the machine at this stage as a last resort. :(

youve wrecked it with the thermal paste, ive done it before, heart breaking stuff

OMG. I could nearly hear the fracture in my heart happen there. *sob*

What is it about the thermal paste that wrecked it? Is it conductive? <edit> (I mean electrically) :) </edit>

    Fuppity fup fup fup.

Played some UT2K4 there, there were artifacts, but they were consistent (like in 2d...they were in the same place repeatedly).

    Expensive mistake. :(

yeah, you are supposed to use thermal paste in the size of a grain of rice and put it right in the centre of the core and let the heatsink spread the paste out, it dosn't matter wheater there is no paste on the side of the core cos most of the heat comes from the centre.
