I'm going to ask a stupid question. Why do you need travel insurance? Get an E111 and you're covered for emergency medical costs. Unless you're definitely doing something risky what is the point? Do you have general insurance in Ireland for similar things?

[ontopic]A friend of mine who came skiing last year got insurance through AIB. He reckons that was the best value package he found. (He worked for BOI at the time!)

Only really want Insurance for baggage I suppose. Could probably get away with it but for piece of mind i wouldn't mind getting it. I do also have BUPA
but am worried in case anything serious happened and one of us could not travel home using a commercial Airline. Unlikely as that is it has happen 2 friends of mine on seporate occasions and the bills to fly them home would have crippled their families but thankfully they had the insuranvce.

I Only want it for one trip as early next year plan an traveling and will need yearly insurance.

By the way the E111 has been replaced
    E111 Government Link

I have applied and received this card last week

    Thanks for the quick replies

    Dave

I agree get your E1 11, just incase, its free so you might aswell take advantage. Other than that AA do travel insurance that covers you for a whole year and as far as i know its really cheap.

    Bon Voyage!!!

Yes, the E111 ocvers emergency medical costs, but if you're involved in a car accident, or break a leg or whatever, and need an extended stay in hospital, the E111 will not cover that. Furthermore, if you need to be repatriated on a special airplane then that could cost thousands of euro and again it wouldn't be covered by the E111 (or the EHIC as I should possibly be calling it).

In Ireland, I have health insurance and contents insurance, which basically cover the same things as travel insurance.

Apart from having the EIII Card thingy now which is v. nice and easy, I've used the additional 'Options' addon with the VHI tariffs. Upgrades you from 65,000 to 100,000 hospital costs abroad, as well as a whole rake of out-patient benefits in Irl too.

P.S. If you have contents insurance and VHI, EIII, etc. - but no travel insurance - what happens if your bags are lost? I thought airlines paid for them anyway? Then again I havn't looked into this enough. :D

I find acetravelinsurance.ie very reasonable - especially for families.
Also if you book through Pigsback.com you can earn Piggy points.

Book your holiday with a gold card and you get free insurance.
