RTÉ's Mooney nominated for TV award
RTÉ presenter Derek Mooney has been nominated for the Television Personality of the Year Award at the Irish Film and Television Awards.

He is up against five other nominees - Gerry Anderson (BBC NI), Jarlath Burns (TG4), Claire Byrne (TV3), Gerry Kelly (UTV) and Grainne Seoige (Sky News Ireland).

Mooney is one of Ireland's best-known broadcasters, hosting RTÉ 1's 'Winning Streak' and 'Mooney Goes Wild' for RTÉ Radio 1.

The Television Personality of the Year is one of five awards that will be voted for by the public.

RTÉ current affairs presenter Miriam O'Callaghan won last year and this year's winner will be announced at the awards ceremony on 30 October.

    Surely this is a joke?

I agree with this sentiment. Now, I know my tv viewing has crashed to near zero the past year but I don't even know 3 of them.
Is Winning Streak his only tv show?....all is lost!

its a way for all the luvvies in tv to tell eachother how great they are

i cant see how grainne seoige or claire byrne can be categorised as tv personalities...theyre just newsreaders

as for derek mooney...where the hell did he come from anyway...i personally reckon he was grown in montroses genetics labs

they used dna from derek davis thelma mansfield marty whelan...and used anne doyle as a surrogate mother.

Who the hell is Derek Mooney? Winning streak I've heard of but I thought Marty Wheelan did that, and I've never heard of Mooney goes wild, oh wait, that's on the Radio 1. Well, he sounds like a great TV personality doesn't he. He does a radio show and a TV "quiz" featuring the same audience as 'Live at 3'.
I agree with you threebeards, this must be a joke. Though, not a particularly funny one.

i wish i could ask that very question. i react to his the sight of his face like i do when i stumble across one of those late night discovery channel eye operations.

Marty does Fame & Fortune which replaces Winning Streak sometimes 9during the summer I expect). I've no idea when Winning Streak is on and I'd rather avoid it so the first person to tell me may get negative reputation points.

Derek Mooney may be a very nice chap, I don't know. The very odd time I've seen Winning Streak he comes across as one of the most annoying prats I've ever seen on TV. I'm sure all the old people just love him.

Well if you were on the show, with a chance of winning €500,000 and a minimum of €10,000 I am sure you'd put up with him for an hour. He is annoying, certainly. It's not just the grannies on that show though. Lots of young people, in for those prizes there too. A cousin of mine was on it once when Mike Murphy was doing it and won £11,000. Not bad for an afternoon's work.

Some of that list are a joke. So who would you nominate?

I was thinking more of the grannies watching it rather than being on it (though a staggering and frightening amount of younger types (mostly country folk if that hasn't insulted anyone too much) seem to watch it as well) but yeah sure, anyone would put up with him if they were on the show. Besides, he may well be far easier to put up with in person rather than while watching the show. G Ryan's radio show tends to annoy the hell out of me as a rule but I met him briefly about 10 years ago and he came across as a pretty good bloke. I'd be pretty annoying presenting Winning Streak or kids TV but no change there from my regular incarnation I suppose.

As for who I'd vote for vote for, I haven't a notion and I don't have any better suggestions. I'd happily put in a special anti-vote for whatshername that presents the entertainment news on TV3 though. She may be dead-on in person, I don't know, but she's more annoying than the weather guy on TV3.

Yes, Mooney deserves an award for his theatrical "oh nooooo!!".

And does anyone else think that for someone in his mid twenties he looks about 40?

now maybe im romanticising the past but murphy was a total pro. buckets of wit and cheeky chappie humour. anyone remember "murphys micro quisim"? the star prize was a ford orion car.

Mike Murphy was indeed better. Derek Mooney is good on the Radio show but his carry on when presenting Winning Streak is enough to make you cringe at times. Luckily, I rarely see it.

Nope I was on the Saturday morning show that he used to present back in 1998 and he turned 21 then. So he should be 27 now.

Derek Mooney is Marty Whelan de-pimped.

Although I'd imagine presenting Winning Streak is barely one step up from doing Telly Bingo.

Surely when talking about Marty Whelan clones the words 'fat' and 'gay' are already inferred?
