Pings and IOLBB?

I know that pings used to be blocked on IOLBB, but I hadn't heard anything about that recently, and I thought I had seen IOL users posting pings in various threads.

But I was using a new IOL connection last night, and I couldn't ping anything. Are pings still blocked on the IOL network, or is it some setting on the ZyXEL modem?

(For the record, the download speed, according to the UTV speedtest page, was about the same as on my Ripwave unit, but connections felt "snappier" - web pages opened faster, and VPN stuff feels a little bit more responsive).

That's what I thought. I wonder why it didn't work.

(The documentation that came with the modem even said that it would fail the ping test on the list of 4 tests that it does when you're setting up the modem).

just got IOLBB the other day, and tried to do a ping test to see how fast my connection was but all my pings failed

umm if i recall you have to disable the firewall options that block it on the modem....

though, mine were working, and now that i try it again ping'n off any machine is failing :/

I found this on boards.iol.ie site http://boards.iol.ie/viewtopic.php?t=61&highlight=ping but maybe this should have been unblocked by now as Gideon says

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 646 ✭✭✭vigos

I asked IOLBB support about this, and they said they're not blocking anything from their side and to look at my firewall settings. They even said to try uninstalling my firewall which I'm not too happy to do.

There is a setting on the router about blocking ICMP, but I assumed that was to prevent someone pinging you, not to prevent you pinging other hosts. When I get the opportunity to test that installation again, I'll change that setting, and see what happens.

(This installation was ordered on August 4th, and the modem was delivered on the 24th, so just under the 15 working days. IOL did send a letter saying it might be delayed, because of overwhelming demand).

Open a command prompt (Start/Run, type cmd and hit enter) and then type ping www.boards.ie

RipWave I'm going to try this on my modem when I get home this evening. I will let you know how I get on

    @ripwave

    thanks

getting request timed out pinging boards

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 646 ✭✭✭vigos

I'm now able to ping. I did the following:

Start up web configurator for the modem,

Click on Advance Settings -> Security

Deselect "ping traffic is blocked from the WAN"

Now to figure out if this has any adverse effects!

the firewall abilities on the zyxel modem are pretty limited. As posted above by vigos if you want to be able to ping from machines behind your modem you need to do what vigos did.

If you happen to reset your modem then you wil obviously have to do that setting again.

The firewall abilities on the zyxel are fundamentally based on the fact that it does NAT, which means that it is inherently safer than any software firewall running on your PC, as packets never even get to your PC in the first place.

What's clear is that it's not a very flexible device, and it should be capable of permitting outbound pings without responding to inbound pings. But in this day and age, any NAT device should be a pre-requisite before anyone connects to a broadband service, and I think ISPs that don't provide this type of protection to their non-technical users are doing them a serious dis-service

    (That means UTV and IBB!).

Yes I should have been more clear about the inflexibilities of the zyxel.

Agree totally with NAT aspect too

Try resetting your modem. Ie go through the wizard setup again. I was getting those pings a few minutes ago. Disgusting aren't they.

Now I just reset it and am getting

If ur pings are blocked it would be useful to findout where.

open up a command prompt and use the tracert command.

Mine here is fine. But if ur pings are blocked it will show where.
    C:\>tracert boards.ie
