So now Wounded Woody is gone, who will replace him in the centre of the Newcastle United Defence?

There is no real quality in the current squad at centre-half, with O'Brien and Hughes being first choice at the minute.

Any speculation as to who will be signed?

What sort of quality defender will we get this close to the transfer deadline?

They've already made enquiries about Gallas from Chelsea, and Sami Kuffour of Bayern Munich. They're also rumoured to be interested in Igor Tudor of Juventus and Joseph Yobo from Everton.

One things for sure, they need 2 decent centre halves pronto. If they can afford to bid £20million for Rooney they can certainly afford 2 or 3 decent defenders - something they badly need.

I really fear for Newcastle this year if they don't sign some defenders quick..... there's a number of players who don't seem happy, Dyer, Shearer & Bellamy to name but 3. Speed is gone, Woodgate is gone. Butt is a good signing, but Kluivert is well known for being troublesome if things don't go his way and Milner is an unproven kid.

The Robson situation is unbelieveable. That Freddie Sheppard clown isn't fit to run a football club. He's almost as bad as Doug Ellis, and that's saying something

I heard today that they want John O'Shea! Bit mad. The story goes that they bid for Rooney to get ManU involved in a bidding war. ManU havent got the full cash amount required though, and arent prepared to take out a loan. So Newky then come in with an offer for O'Shea that allows ManU to get Rooney

On another thread Davenport, Yobo and Hyypia were mentioned.

Andrade the central midfielder ?

personnally I would like to see Paulo Cannovaro(Fabio's brother) .
he's 23(a year younger than woodgate) , he plays for Parma , a selling club so with Newcastles money he shouldnt be that difficult to purchase .
He's a brilliant defender in the similiar mold to his brother , the only dificulty I can see is him wanting to come to England , and with the Italian game coming apart lots of players want out of the league now .

He is World Class but only people familiar with Italian football know it .

They don't need to replace him, they are going to employ a 2-2-6 formation next season.

looks like Newcastle may be in for Kuffour.
They need to forget about signing Rooney and get some defenders!
I think the toons will need more then just one defender. after clutching another draw from the jaws of victory!
