Has anyone flown with airlingus and brought an electric guitar (in a gig bag)as carry on luggage, or do they make you check it in?

    thanks

It will be put in oversized luggage. Or you could ask polietly could you take it on, but I doubt they will let you. Buy a hardcase. Jesus, ring Aerlingus and ask...

    V good point.

But on the other hand, they probably wouldnt let you take it on, simply because the guitar strings could be used as garrotte strings. That might sound stupid, even for post 9/11 times, but my dad was flying recently and he has a keyring with a little guinness penknife with a blade about 3/4 inch long and as blunt as a marble, but they took it away, simply because it was some form of weapon. It was pretty crap, but he had owned it for 30 years so there was sentimental value there

    So, no guitars on board!

I rang airlingus before about an acoustic guitar asking them questions... they hadn't a clue, I got transferred to a guy who said most people buy an extra seat for their instrument.... that might be ok if the fare was inexpensive and the guitar was worth it.... in my case the fare will be too expensive to purchase another seat and the guitar will not be worth it!!

Just wondering if anyone had ever brought their guitar hand luggage before... some guy posted before about his pick guard getting cracked when he checked his guitar in as luggage in a hard case. I think it was an original thinline tele he was talking about.

    Ok.
Get a hard case. Wrap the guitar in bubble wrap (office supply shop), failing that use towels, tape the bubble wrap or towels up so the guitar is sealed and secure. Place in case. Lock case, tape the case shut round the hinges and locks, so it cannot be opened without cutting the tape off, use insulatating tape (hardware store) or duct tape (hardware store).

Insure your guitar : http://www.dolmen-insurance.ie/ . Ring them for a quote.
They insured my guitar for euro 2,500 for euro 138. Worldwide, fire theft, accidental damage you name it.

Anymore questions ? No ? Good.

Why the hell do they let you bring bottles on for then? Surely a broken bottle makes a terrific weapon?

Not as good as you might think, and you have to know how to break it properly. But yeah, stupid rules. Plus, in theory you could use a guitar to beat someone to death, but that would be such an insignificant way to waste such a beautiful thing.

In theory you could use your body to beat someone to death. Or you could grow Hulk-like muscles and rip the seat out of the plane and beat someone to death with THAT. So in closing, aeroplanes should actually be empty padded tubes filled with people in straight jackets and muzzles. Like flying mental hospitals.

I don't know about airlingus but I've brought a bass on as carry on with Continental without any trouble. If its a bolt on neck you could always take off the neck.

brought one on ryanair and germanwings without any bother. Ryanair said that I would have to put it in stowage when I got to the plane but i just walked on unchallenged

I brought a prs back with aer lingus as hand luggage last summer from new york it was in a hard case that was pretty big and it was no problem. they let me put it in the overhead compartment .i think its really up to the discretion of the staff on duty.
the check in desk told me to take it in and ask at the gate and if they couldnt fit it on they'd put it down with the buggy's cos they let you bring thm up to the plane and get it back as you were disembarking.
