Please help. I was causally copying a lot of folders which all contained mp3's from a dvd in my dvd-rom into my folder in my c drive and after a lot of copying, my screen suddenly goes black followed by a message :
    Disk Write Error
Unable to write to disk in drive c:
Data or file may be lost.
    Press any key to continue.

Now whenever I do something, to do with the c drive, like go on the internet I get this whole thing every two seconds. Can someone please help? I am crap with computers.

I'd take a guess and say you might've run out of space on c? Find out how much you have left (right click on c, go to properties).

Thanks for replying, I have 15 gb of free space out of a total of 40gb.

What version of Windows are you using? Is Windows installed on the C: drive? have you recently added any new devices to your PC?

Hmmm, does scandisk report everything is nominal with the destination drive?

If its windows 98 run mainteance wizard under start, programs, accessories, system tools, maintence and let it run but you will have to turn off screensaver otherwise it will keep restarting. If that doesnt sort it when booting press F8 and go to command prompt(second last item)enter and type scandisk then enter and do the full scan at end to test for bad sectors.
If you have a D drive then do:

c:\d: and enter which will bring you to d:\ and enter scandisk again ie d:\scandisk.

do this for every partition you have like e: or f:

If this doesnt sort it then change your ide cable.

So I am replying to this via an internet cafe. My coputer froze and I turned it off. I then turned it ion again and it will not load windows! I have to format my hard drive again and re install windows. Arghh. All this troule over a few mp3's. This sucketh much.

I wouldn't say it was the MP3's that did it. I would not be surprised if it happens again once you reinstall everything. Let us know..

If you want help diagnosing this problem and getting a solution you are going to have to give us more information! You may not have to reinstall Windows at all, depending on what version of Windows you are using there are different steps that can be taken to attempt a Windows repair. The following info would be helpful...
    • Version of Windows
    • Type of filesystem - FAT or NTFS
    • Do you have the Windows install CD?
    • When the BIOS loads does it detect the Hard Drive?
    • Does the Windows boot screen with the option to boot into safe mode display, or does it fail even before this loads?
