Hey I work in a nightclub that shall remain nameless for now....
the pub is worked around 5 tills. reg 1 and 2 are in the main bar, reg 3 in the middle small bar and reg 4 annd 5 in the nightclub. I was working on reg 5 for saturday night. at about 3am reg 5 closes and the people working on it are moved on to other tills. I was moved to reg 3. 1 person moved to reg 4 and another moved to reg 1. At the end of the night we had been told reg 4 was 50 euro short. "50 EURO!!!" WEall questioned.and the boss(well actually second in command) said "yea and one of you has pocketed it as far as the boss is concerned". we were all really pissed off. about 7 of us. then we were told if it didnt show up it wa coming out of our tips. I have known all those workers for ages and I didnt even touch the till as you cant unless you are assigned to it. I know it wasnt stolen. it may have just been mistakes that accmulated cause it's not possible to make 50euro of a mistake. at the end of the night the boss brought us all into the main bar and plain and simple accused us of stealing. I was shocked that he would do this as he has never been like this in my time of being there. and he said he is going to be checking each till twice form now on and if thre is any significant shortage., whoever is working at the time shall be getting a warning and if you get three youre gone. no matter who you are or what till you are on. I am realy angry, not just because of the tips being taken but also because of the fact that he can just straight away say that one of us is thief,.

surely that isnt legal is it? and what do you suggest be done?

If all the barstaff gang up and approach the first in command. What he has done is not on. Especially if there is no way that you or some others can access the till. For all you know it could have been the manager that stole it.

Everyone should refuse to work until you get it back & he apologises.

Keeping a till exactly right is difficult unless you're only taking in standard amounts (say if one till is just used for the entry fee & cloakroom - you're only taking in fivers and €2's or whatever). But a bar till would be next to impossible to keep exactly right, particularly when it's darkish, hectic, and people are throwing weird chunks of change at you.

As Imposter says, organise yourselves, nominate one person (why not yourself?) to talk to the manager/supervisor on behalf of the staff and come up with a compromise. For example, allow him to keep his three warnings system, but make it more reasonable - say an over or short of €5 in one day on a till incurs a warning, or being consistently over or short on a till incurs a warning too.

Is there any chance at all that someone did steal it? If you say this freak out was out of character, perhaps a till or two have been missing a lot of cash recently, and he's putting his foot down now?

You are not legally responsible for this money. I looked into this last year when I was working in a cloakroom in a nightclub. A jacket went missing during the night and it was never determined what happened to it. The boss tried to take the cost of replacing it from our wages until I presented him with a printout of an email I got from one of the government advice agencies (could have been basis.ie I'm not sure) which backed me up on my assertation that it wasn't our financial responsibility as we were working as agents of the business at the time the jacket went missing. He folded.

I'm 100% sure that you can't be asked to make up a shortage on a till. Confront him on it. Ask him does he know that his actions are illegal and ask for your money back. Do this on a Saturday night before ye all start. If he gets thick, all of ye walk and leave him get burnt by not having staff to run his bar on a Saturday night.

I actually wrote this last week, but boards was back-up when I went to post.
Wow! It is usually accurate to within about €50, I'm actually surprised. Heard of something before where the tills were down by £1,000 on the night. The manager decided he'd have to have a whip-around. The manager counted it up wrong and the calculator roll proved him wrong.

I found €25(?) one night stuck down the back of a till - people putting money down on the cash drawer and then closing it and the notes getting caught.

    What did the videotape say?

What does your contract say about shortages? How are tips calculated? Does everything go in the till and you get any overage or do you pocket it at the time? Or do you get a % of your sales.

Manager sounds quite unprofessional for the way he handled it. Could do with some HR training.

What happens if the till is over by €50? Will it then be shared out among the staff?

Wonder what would happen if the till amount was OVER by €50?
Cant you say you got no tips?

Depending on your contract (or employment) usually there can be no deductions from your wages without your expressed permission; this would usually have to be given in writing. You'd have to check your contract to see if tips are part of your wages or a bonus.

If it's a bonus (considering that bonus' are usually performance related) the staff didn't perform well on the night in question. From what you said there were at least 9 people handling the case so worst case sernario you'll get hit for €5.55. What I always find useful is to check teh float before you start work, if your boss has a problem with you checking the float I'd be very suspicious.

That basis.ie website is good all right. But unfortunately, the backup from the government generally isn't. I phoned to ask for advice from a rights commissioner about how to get an employer to pay sick pay and holiday pay to casual workers. I was told that it would be necessary to fill out a form and apply for a hearing with a rights commissioner. Now, how many casuals, working with no job security, are going to do that?

Treating casuals as if they were contractors is a regular scam, among middle-class employments even more than blue-collar ones.
