Rome: Total War Demo (heads up)

Rome: Total War is the hotly anticipated sequel to Medieval: Total War, the game that is so good it has taken over peoples lives. Rome has a new 3D engine that is so good it has been used in TV documentaries about Roman battles.

Well, the demo is "officiall"y out tomorrow at 12.00pm PDT - which is about 6pm here. You'll be lucky to get it that soon with the amount of peeps after it. So here's a heads up: I'm downloading now ;) I'm passing the time by spreading the news.

I got my info from GameFAQs, here:
    http://boards.gamefaqs.com/gfaqs/genmessage.php?board=35243&topic=15849942&page=0

    - You need a Bit Torrent program. Google for BitTornado. That's what I'm using.

    - Go to this link to get the .torrent file:
    http://alluvion.org/download.php?info_hash=a6e200a0a88921d363d0256ae10741dd8e6a7771

    Username: Russian
    Password: abc123

Hopefully, you will be able to download a torrent file. Once downloaded, you open that file in your Bit Torrent program. You will then be asked to save the file "Rome Demo.rar". It's about 142MB and is taking me about 2hrs to download on 512/128 dsl broadband.

    - You'll then need WinRAR to uncompress the file. Google for that too.

Good luck. I had some trouble getting the torrent file, bcos of a dodgy link. It seems fine now. If you have any trouble, visit that GameFAQs link.

Ooooh, I've only got 11mins to go.

Nah, it wasn't my account. It was originally posted on some Rome message board and was then leaked to another board where I read it. Then I put it here :).

Looks like nobody was quick enough here though.

Im quite impressed - The old basic building blocks appear to be all present and correct - spears vs cav, swords vs spears, cav vs swords - and visually it never looks better. In the tutorial battle when the gaul cavalry impacts on your spear wall and the horses rear up and away and get flipped over and to the side...its amazing to see.

The troops cheering when they win a scrap, commanders pointing as they issues commands, and the rows of Carthagian spears leveling in formation against the Roman attack at Trebia and stuff is small but still nice. Its a tribute to the game that a minor detail in RTW is celebrated as a major and innovative breakthrough for LOTR.

The UI changes are going to take some getting used to. Im used to MTW so anything different is going to feel odd till I get accustomed.

I would have liked to seen even a small portion of the strategic level game as this is a major portion of my enjoyment of other TW games and Id have liked to have tested the old ambushes and flanking attacks. But how and ever.

anyone managed to beat the rtw demo with the romans yet? ive never played medeival but i won in style playing as the cartheginians on my first go of rtw ,then i installed the patch and now every time i play as the romans hanibal hands me my arse in a brown paper bag. i thought it was a brilliant strategic victory for hannibal (despite being without B.A and murdoc on this one) but judging by this it must have been a walk in the park for him

The Valour of the Carthagians is set quite high, whilst the Valour of the Romans is relatively low so that even the most inept player gets it historically "right" :D Its also a morale booster for a player, encouraging them to buy the game - if the demo thrashed them they might be scared off.

So, with the Romans being practically programmed to lose its going to be very difficult to win with them. Best bet might be to turn the entire army against one of the ambushing wings, then the other - though this is a bit dubious, as whilst the player might know the trap is set, the Roman General wouldnt. Meh.

As I saw someone else suggest the best option for the Romans is to march off the map without engaging - tactical draw, strategic victory. The Romans big mistake was actually to commit to battle too early. Hannibal was eventually beaten when the Romans denied him opportunities to defeat them.

ah iiiiiiiiiiiinteresting, valour you say , still its a bitof a grudge now for me cos that hannibal git has whooped me 3 times in a row now , ive tried going for one of the ambushing groups first but the main part of his force joins up with the other group and sits there waiting for me to attack , methinks some sort of hit and run tactics might work well with this big group as the range of the roman missile units is pants , one things for certain im not buying the game till i can kick hanibals arse (lets see if he loves it when THAT plan comes together) :D
