Ok I watched the fight tonight and Andy Lee lost, the other guy boxed smarter than him and won, after a 'count back' as they ended up on the same score.

But when I was just looking at Unison's breaking news service just now I noticed this:

    Andy Lee through to quarter-finals

    19:31 Saturday August 21st 2004

Andy Lee is through to the quarter-finals of the Olympic boxing in Athens.
The Limerick boxer defeated Hassan Ndam Njikam in tonight's second round contest.

But RTE.ie have it right http://www.rte.ie/sport/2004/0821/lee.html?OLYSTORY
    Cameroon fighter ends Lee's Games
    Saturday, August 21 2004 9:26

Irish boxer Andy Lee crashed out of the middleweight division at the Olympic Games by the narrowest of margins this evening, beaten in his last 16 bout against Cameroon's Hassan Ndam Njikam.

The fight had finished 27 points apiece but the 20-year-old lost the countback decision against the elusive African.

Lee, who beat Mexico's Alfredo Lopez in round one, was behind for most of the contest but pulled level in the dying seconds.

The Limerick man was taken to hospital afterwards with a hand injury.

    Filed by James Boylan

So has anyone else noticed these breaking news services getting things SO wrong, from what I remember the fight hadn't even started when the Unison report was filed. Reminds me of the US 2000 Presidential Election, when FOX News Called the election to Bush, maybe I should forward this to Michael Moore!?!

As I was reading through your post, I was thinking of the 2000 election and then I saw it mentioned at the end. Anyway, Andy Lee was unfortunate. Looking at the fight though, I think the Cameroon boxer did shade it. He'll learn from this and he will be back for Beijing. He is only 20.

I saw the fight on TV and andy lee banging his fists off the ground after the ref raised the Cameroon fella's arm to declare him the winner. I doubt Lee is through.

That was from disappointment. Like so many Irish since the games began, he was very close. We have had a lot of people going out, by one place or one point or whatever. His is just another to add to the list.

Was that where he got the hand injury from?

While it was a close fight, Njikam would have been robbed if he'd lost.

Some of the analysts are saying there were punches thrown for which no score was given to Andy Lee. There may have been some for the other guy, but it could have been a very different result.
