I am thinking of upgrading my CPu.
I have an Xp2100 with 768mb of DDR2700 and an Asus A7v333 motherboard.
I am planning on getting a Barton xp2500 and overclocking it to an xp3200.
I believe this is straightforward depending on the core.I increase the FSB to 400Mhz but it seems the A7v333 can only go to 266Mhz.
Will my current motherboard and ram allow for this ?

I think you will be able to overclock it to 3000+ and thats about it. This is cause your ram is only pc2700. But all you would need to do is buy a amd2500 chip and replace your old one. Cheap upgrade but might last you for some time.

Someone else will explain it in more detail and will be able to help you with your problem. Im only a newbie when it comes to computers.

A couple of problems. As was mentioned the Ram is only rated for 166mhz FSB.....

The main problem you will find is that your motherboard just isint compatible with 400mhz FSB (im not even sure if its compatible with 333mhz). Given that all the new XP chips are super locked that means the only way to overclock is through the FSB.......

Also that board shouldnt have a PCI/AGP lock so when you go away from standard FSB speeds (100,133,166,200) your hard drives and GFX card will be running out of spec.........

[edit] Yea i think your motherboard is only 266mhz FSB (missed that in your post the first read).

TBH if you are looking for a decent difference performance wise your gonna need a new motherboard, as the one you have just wont hack it.

the highest cpu you can put on an a7v333 is a 2400xp.

The bus speed of the mobo only goes to 266. The 2400xp is the highest 266 bus chip you can get.

If you want to buy a barton 2500xp you will be buying a new mobo

    Thanks for the advice.
Seems a Barton upgrade isnt financially viable.
