The Mountaineering Council of Ireland [http://www.mountaineering.ie/] provide a list of clubs. But answer the following questions and I might be able to narrow it down for you

What part of the country are you in?

What age and experience do you have?
Some clubs will be slow to take out people under 18 (insurance reasons), and choice of club will depend on exactly what you are interested in - way marked ways, trail walking, hiking, scrambling etc.

    What are you interested in?

Im 25, live in Dublin and have no experience in mountaineering or hill-walking. I'm not sure what I'm interested in as I don't know the differences. But was just looking for some information to point a total novice in the right direction.

Fair enough. Then most of the Dublin based clubs listed on the MCI website should be okay. Probably the best thing to do is check out their websites and see where/when they meet. Organised walks amongst memebers might be a bit less frequent in summer but things will pick up when in September.

If you think you might be interested in rock climbing and mountaineering later then the IMC (Irish Mountaineering Club) or some of the college clubs with graduate sections (like UCD) will give you the best oppertunity to try it out.

One thing you will need before you start is some gear. Nothing too fancy but boots and a decent rain jacket are a must. Turning up for a walk in jeans and runners will lose you mountain cred and many groups just won't let you on the hills with them.

If you need any pointers on where and what to get let us know.

Good boots and a rain jacket + fleece will keep you comfy and means you'll enjoy yourself more. Don't worry about 'cred' although sliabh's comment is, sadly, true.
