Unbreakable

Ok this is a movie which I love and tbh I think its his best work as a director. I havent seen the Village yet but I have heard good things. I hated Signs as I thought it was a very sloppy work .. plot was full of holes and it looked like it was rushed to the screen instead of tweaking the script more. Don't get me wrong I loved the concept but I didnt think it was realised properly. The Sixth sense was also good but I felt the ending carried it. The thing about Unbreakable is that its audience is very divided .. it seems to be one of those love it or hate it movies. The subject matter is very interesting to me as i used to collect comic books but apart from the subject matter I think it is an excellently made movie. The more I watch it the better it gets, usually after I watch a movie a couple of times I start to see holes in the plot but the more i watch Unbreakable the more I see little things that I missed on previous viewings. Also it has some amazing scenes such as the train station scene and the final fight with the serial killer. What I want to know is why did people hate it and why did people love it. Discuss.

I recently got into a discussion about Unbreakable and, as is typical with any discussion of Shyamalan's movies, half the people I was speaking to hated it the movie. From what they said, it seems as if most tended to dislike it because of its 'cheesy' ending. And you can kind of see their point - taken as a serious drama (albeit one with a supernatural twist), the ending does come across as somewhat cheesy.

However, taken as an almost cartoon, comic-book style story of superheroes and supervillains (albeit one dressed up as a serious drama and played completely straight), it suits the movie perfectly.

So I think most people tend to dislike it because, to them, the movie can't make up its mind which mask it wants to wear: the superhero mask, or the serious drama one.

I think it was good up until the ending but I see why that ending was put in. It's a very comic book style closer. I felt cheated when I saw it in the cinema but thinking back on it I can't see how else they would have ended it (a fight would have been just too naff).

Just giving my opinion, not trying to start a dispute with anyone.
I really disliked Unbreakable. I had high expectations because I liked Sixth Sense so much. I enjoyed the movie up to the point where the superheroe angle was just in-your-face obvious. I think that information was given too soon. It was a letdown and it made me feel stupid. I felt annoyed with myself that I had rented it(and relieved that I hadn't spent the money to go see it).

I think Unbreakable is pretty underrated, I think its approach to a superhero/comic book story is different and very understated and although it doesn't go at a break neck pace I think it works. But it really depends how you view it, as a drama or a comic book film - and with a drama you're going to be disappointed but as a comic book movie I think its pretty successful. Well thats just my opinion anyway.

Well whether its a comic book / supernatural movie or a serious drama i dont know. all i know is i enjoyed watching it, it has a lot of slow moving scenes with lots of atmosphere which i think are great and were done very well.

I really enjoyed this film too. We could all see what was going to happen, but isnt it the same with all movies? Why then did people go to see the passion of christ, we all know he gets crucified.

Think it's a great film, a lot better than the sixth sense ... especially once you get over the gimmick of the surprise ending

you say Signs was 'rushed' to the screen and Unbreakable wasn't? heres a quick list of things I feel should have been 'tweaked':

*there is no explanation for Dunn's sixth sense/telepathy
*His whole life Dunn has never been sick and this only strikes him as strange until Price blatantly points it out to him
*Price wants to make Dunn understand, and is willing to risk Dunn simply turning him in to the police to do so. This is something he spends his whole life preparing for, masterminding three successful acts of devastating terrorism, and he is defeated by a quick phonecall to the cops (?!?)
*finally, the ending itself; I don't mean the twist here, I'm talking about the summing up of the entire movie, the big finale, all taken care of with a freeze frame fade punctuated with a paragraph of text.

This has 'rushed' written all over it

I knew nothing about it going into it, but it was a great movie!

I found it boring, and the ending a bit lame.

Thank you - so far in this thread, I thought I was the only one who thought that.

It was a slow-burn movie; an interesting idea, although with plot holes that have already been pointed out - also, I felt that using Bruce Willis again after the success of Sixth Sense (overrated IMO, especially the muppet reviewers who insisted you'd have to see it twice to "get it") - my problem with it is that it spends so long building up, and then doesn't really go anywhere.

Im not sure if you quite got what the film was about .. it was a homage to the comic book genre. (1) If u watch it again there is an explanation for his powers. (2) I know many people who have gone for years w/o been sick .. i dont think the absence of illness is something many people think about. (3) Price imho was driven to his evil acts because of his obsession with proving that 'superheroes' do exsist in order to give his life some meaning ... he was already in a prison physically and mentally and in some twisted way I think he wanted to be punished for what he had done. (4) nothing I can say here .. thats a difference in taste.

I dont agree that there was any plot holes in this movie .. I think many people watched it in the wrong way ... they expected something different and were dissappointed when they didnt get it.

I liked unbreakable best between it signs and the sixth sense. Haven't seen the Village yet.Thought it was best work as I although I enjoyed the other 2 alot I thought the endings were not great particularly signs which was going really good till the very end. I personally did not find the ending cheesy at all to unbreakable. And few things make me cringe as much as that seen when the young child with the bone illness takes that damn tea cup rid.....ouch!

i found unbreakable to be a very boring movie. It made no sense at all. Total and utter rubbish but I think it's still better than the waste of a movie the village is.

Ha, ha .... bet you didn't see that coming! Wooooooo.

And wow, I just templated the script for every Shyamalan movie for the next 20 years.

(ps - sorry for wasting your time. I just hate hacks like him making the big time on the back of a gimmick and then doing nothing but regurgitating the same old tired formula.)
