Should motorsports be in the Olympics?

I think it should, maybe a single seater class, sportscar class, saloon/touring car class, and some rally class events. It already has global amateur involvement and following and would open the games up to a huge new audience of couch potatos like me who get exhausted even watching athletics. The cars would have to be identical in each class.

Yes, even if it's just to annoy the cyclists!

AFAIK to be accepted as an Olympic sport it needs to be participated in by men and women (apart from the odd fluke, how many women racing drivers do you know?) and in more than two thirds of the countries in the world.

I can find no info on the Ghanaian Women's touring car championship, google has failed me.

lol there are plenty of women in amateur motorsport, especially rallying.

p.s. a google for Ghanaian women's judo team came up with fake nude pics of the Olsen twins

I thought the Olympics were purely athletic events..? Human bodies at the peak of fitness being pushed to their extreme limits of endurance ... I don't see how any type of motor sports fit in there.

which is why we have things like shooting & archery  , doesn't look like extreme endurance to me or bodies being pushed- if a rifle and a bow and arrow are a valid extension of the human body and are allowed in the games, then it follows logically that a car is also

course the car thing will never happen if 2/3rds of the countries have 2 do the sport

Well shooting and archery aside, what I said more-or-less rings true;- although, in archery or shooting, it is still the person who is doing the vast majority of the work involved, their skill and pinpoint accuracy being paramount to their success. When it comes to motorsports, I think a great amount of the success or failure is down to the configuration or the tweaking of the car in question. It just doesn't seem like a natural "Olympic" sport to me - most probably because it relies so heavily on machinery and not quite as specifically on the physical or mental prowess of the athlete in question.

If motor sport gets in there I want computer games in as well as you use more or less the same abilities
    :D

Bard, erm ....no it doesn't

i really don't want to get in2 this
what do you think happens when someone fires a gun -what does most of the work? - does the person move the bullet themselves? exactly.

let me challenge your "physical and mental prowess with regards to motorsport"
so, by your logic, when your driving a car you don't worry about:

    steering,
    co-ordinating braking with gearchanging,
    slipstreaming,
    achieving the perfect line,
    cutting off other drivers
    overtaking other drivers
    picking the correct tyres
doing reams and reams of laps to achieve the best set-up
    (I won't go on) :)
(Oh look thats logic bit taken care of)

Not to mention the amount of gear shifts, multiple G corners, and often 70-200 lap endurace of the drivers
(oh look they'res the physical!) :)

    apparently anyone can be Schumacher!

I don't think it should be an olympic sport, I'm just challenging you on the fact you have absolutely no clue what you're talking about and your just saying the first thing that'll pop into your head

and who do you think the tweaking of the car is down to?
the mechanics don't sit in the car and do a few laps!! it has to be customised to a drivers style! and most often in rally racing etc the DRIVER picks the tyres suspension set-up and configuration.....

it'd be interesting to see how the drugs have an affect in a motorsport event..

Any type of motorracing, be it bike or car, should be BANNED! Car racing encourages young lads to be joyriders. Think of all the people who have had their lives DESTROYED by joyriders. A friend of my brother's was KILLED by joyriders last week. And my cousin was killed while motorbike racing 2 months ago. I can't understand why you support such "sports". As an Emergency Room nurse, I have seen HORRIFIC injuries as a result of these "sports". What is WRONG with you people?

    vroom vroOM vvvVVVROOM!

Motorsports don't encourage joyriding. Sorry for your loss, but the main cause of joyriding is adolescents growing up with no boundaries and parents that are more worried about where their next fix is coming from than what there kids are doing. I can't see even the stupidest person in the world watching a touring car race, then deciding to go rob a car and drive it around streets at 100mph. It's more of a social problem that an effect of motorsports.

Ive seen this discussion on other motorsports boards (yes, there are motorsport boards where there is actually discussion....can you believe that? )

Anyway, general result was that you could never find enough countries that ran the same divisions in order to have a universally accepted series, be it Fiat Puntos (bleh!) or single seaters. Motorsport is in a world all of its own; in order to satisy all area's in an olympic contest, there would need to be hundereds of different categories ie, cars, bikes, rally, circuit racing, drag racing.....

    Aint gonna happen... :D

How about something like the Race of Champions thats held every year.Eurosport used to show highlights of it.It's basically a rally over a super special stage , with champions from all motorsport backrounds compete against each other.I believe i heard during ITV's coverage recently that M.Schumacher is taking part for the first time this year. It'll never happen of course but would be good to watch methinks ;) .

That's why I would like to see a manufacturer supply X amount of identical cars (based on a certain series or whatever so that the driver could actually race). Everyone on the same level. Actually they need to do it in F1 to keep me awake :(

Have you ever raced??? Motorsport pushes people a lot further than most other sports, both physically and mentally.

I think they should be in the Olympics but its just the organising of the event thats the trouble. The Olympics usually are right in the middle of the F1, IRL, CART, Moto GP and the British and World Superbikes Championships so its not that easy

I dont think olympics and motorsport really go together. Look at the participation in the tennis and the football alot of the top players didnt care whether they won a medal or not. The minority sports need the coverage they get throughout the Olympics to boost participation and interest in their sport.
