What's this like compared to with a PC?

We use Oracle JDeveloper and Visual Studio in college for projects.

I am going into final year and am lucky enough to have a bit of spare cash (cancelled trip to Mexico). I can get an eMac with the following spec for EUR798.60 .

    1.25GHz PowerPC G4
    256MB DDR333 SDRAM
    40GB Ultra ATA drive
    DVD/CD-RW drive
    ATI Radeon 9200
    32MB DDR video memory
    56K internal modem
    AirPort Extreme Ready

It would be useful for graphics stuff that I will be doing as well.

I also have a laptop at my disposal but would leave that for family use.

Development on Macs is sweet (OS X) - if you are familiar with linux/*NIX tools you'll be on familiar ground. You have all the standard gnu tools; make, gcc etc and the ides (xcode) that apple supply are more than sufficent if you don't like working in vi/emacs. Java development is just as on other platforms, fairly easy :)

For God's sake hold off for at least two weeks, at least till after the Paris Expo! There's new iMacs afoot:

And, I have to say that getting a Mac without a SuperDrive is like buying a Porsche without the alloys ;-)

I have to buy a powerbook v.v.soon, should I hold off the two weeks anyway, even at the risk of incurring wrath of my new college who are demanding I show up with a laptop... My q. I guess is do apple tend to make their major announcements at these things, and although the G5 Powerbook still apperas to be some way off might their be a price drop or sumthing?

I have to buy a powerbook
Isn't that terrible! :p All I can say is do do do! Frickin sweet things - got one about 2-3 weeks ago and love it! :) G5 powerbooks prob won't be out until at least this time next year and I don't see a price drop happening until such time as there are "serious" rumours being posted about on places like macrumours.com etc.

Wasn't going to stretch to an iMac.

eMac is about 700 with the educational discount at the mo.

it looks like the powerbooks are not going to be upgraded until pre-christmas / end of year, with it only appears the imac getting the upgrade at the paris expo......

Will the eMac go down in price if the iMacs get a better spec?

Also the new iMacs are expected to retail at about €1300+. This includes superdrive and 17in monitor?

Sorry, should've been clearer: MacRumors and others are stating that the new iMac will replace both the existing iMacs and the eMac. (I don't see why the "budget" G4 eMac would be for the chop, but there you go)

    - And on iBooks/PowerBooks: while G5 is far off, G4 upgrades aren't (timeframe for next update is anyone's guess).

Suddenly outdated stock can be gotten 'cheaply' from both Rob-u-Store on Kildare St. and Cancom (in the UK) - a Rev.1 Dual 1.8GHz G5 can now be picked up for €1900 or less...
