How do I create FTP or file hosting?

This is probably more suited to Web Hosting but that seems to be closed for the time being.

I want to share files on my computer with others. I'm not familiar with FTP at all. I'd like to have a certain directory that is accessible from any internet connection.

This seems pretty vague but any suggestions will probably prompt more questions.

    TIA

    EDIT: btw i'm using linux.

EDIT 2: actually this might be better off in the Linux forum. Can it be moved mods?

check out http://www.sourceforge.net - do a search for ftp server, you should find something good there, I usually do :) Plus it's all opensource and freeware!

    It is what it's.

glftpd is great (extreamly configurable) but may be dificult to set up if you arnt familar with FTP/Linux. The instructions are straight forward enough though.

AnonFTPD sounds like your best bet. It comes with most major Linux distributions. What distro are you using?

By the way, if it's not anonymous access you're looking for (you just want FTP for yourself/small group of people) then Pro-FTPD is probably your best bet. It also comes with most major Linux distros.

Generally with home connections your ip address is going to change all the time aswell so you'll need something to redirect to your box. Something like www.dyndns.org will give you an address like stark.dyndns.org that will always point to your box
