    Hey all.

Does anybody work for HP doing tech support? Could you tell me what type of hours you're expected to work, what the shifts are like?

    Cheers

Depends on the site, is the job your looking at working directly for HP or through another company. HP support Intel, Microsoft, Vodafone and BOI to name just a few.

Hmm, I'm not too sure. It's the tech sup. job that CPL always advertise. It's based in Clonskeagh so I think it's HP directly, but any info would be great!

It is the Bank Of Ireland one then. Am working there myself but not in tech support as such. Doing data processing/data backup/printshop bla bla bla bla bla.

I know that job - I had an interview via CPL last week for it.
It's 12 hour shifts, with alternating day/night shifts (though this was for a particular customer in the states, so it might be different). I was offered the job but had to decline as it's too far from where i live and couldn't be punctual.
Basically HP do tech support for a load of their business customers/companies, so that covers everything from basic computer use to troubleshooting the networks etc. There's a weeks training, and they expect a high enough level of competence and OS knowledge.

Im working for the OOH team in HP.What desk did you go for the interview then.Workwise its pretty good as the customers are mostly very nice(dont deal with joe public thank god)Working 12 hour shifts is tough though but you get used too it.Its pretty good experience to have on your CV.As a previous poster said you work for different desks.
Normally most of the desks work from eight in the morning till eleven at night, eight hour shifts and if you work for companies like unilever, syngenta etc you get 16% shift allownace which aint soo bad.And then you have our desk where we work 12 hour shifts and support 9 different companies.Loads of time off and the money is pretty of.Technical wise it takes a few weeks to get used to an individual desk.So were you offered a job in HP then?

25,000 if you work nights as well, 4 days on then 4 days off, 12 hour days
23,000 if you work on a normal desk with shift allowance, 9 hour days
    19,000 or 20,000 if you work on a 9 to 5 desk

Ye I do those shifts alright. You may think 25k is great but when you are working nights, it gets annoying...very annoying. Maybe I am just sick of it after my 5 months there! Go me! I am a role model!

    Hi daibhad

Me thinks this is for the BOI helpdesk (they've always used CPL in the past) ...I used to work on the desk but I'm in another area now....quite honestly I would not recommend it, the management (which are still BOI cutovers & not true HP management so I can't comment on HP as a whole) are ignorant, back stabbing, gutless idiots...& I'm being very mild, thankfully management in the rest of the company are a lot better... do yourself a favor, go for the interview, if they say it's for the BOI contract don't go near it with a 50ft barge pole

Hey all. Thanks for the replies. I decided not to go for it mainly due the shifts and my lack of transportation. I forgot what company it was for but it wasn't BOI.

    Cheers

They used to run to run a minibus up and down to the DART from that estate. Dunno if they still do. Its also close to the no10 bus which is very frequent.

Really? I much prefer nights to days. I end up getting more sleep when I work nights as well because I go to sleep straight away when I get home. When I work days I mighnt go to sleep until 11 or 12 (7:30-7:30 shifts here).

I probably would do for all those reasons but I have to do ten times more work during nights then days.

yeah, I assume lots of those HP support contracts are for weekends/out of hours only? Since we man the helpdesk in Glanbia from about 8.15-17.30 and switch the phones over to HP outside that.

Might be worth noting that HP currently have a salary freeze on.

sorry to revive this but i'm going for an interview for tech support(through cpl). Just wondering what kind of level of knowledge are they looking for in the interview. I did the online test and only scored 50% but this was mainly because there were a lot of questions on microsoft access which i've never used before. Also do you think they would frown upon the fact that i'm studying computer programming part, only two nights a week so wouldnt really clash with 9-5 work. Cheers

DO NOT MENTION YOU LIKE PROGRAMMING. YOU WILL FAIL IF YOU SAY YOU LIKE PROGRAMMING.

The interviewer will talk as if its a casual talk, and act as if you doing programming is good. Even ask your CPL person, and they'll confirm that HP don't hire people who have an intrest in programming.

I found out about this too late, and failed the interview. Can't do another interview, as HP will only interview you again after 2 years.

What site is the job for Al??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 910 ✭✭✭rick_fantastic

there are **** loads of different desks down in hp in clonskeagh. i just finished working for the OOH2 Desk which supports Ericsson and Wartsila Propulsion. Was a dead handy job. Working the days were a bit **** being that all the managers are in and making u work. but oh the nights were savage. the 12hr shifts are hard going if u plan on doing them expect to have no social life if ur working. all u can do is sleep and work.

also, when doing shifts like this u can expect to be working for a solid 2 months of weekends.

hp interview technical test consists of.....

    1. What troubleshooting steps would you take if ur computer screen was black
    2. What would you do if u found out computer was infected with virus
    3. What does PING mean?
    4. What does TRACERT mean?
    5. How are outlook data files stored?

Talk about interested in network administration, leadership ie team leader stuff.
Also try and get the extra grand a year. most people start on 20000 but if u can talk ur way up to 21000 go for it

stay away from the bank of ireland desk in HP.You would expect on average of 100 calls a day. Technical support my arse, more like customer service on the desk. The best desks are microsoft, thames water and syngenta to a certain extent. Wartsilla is quite good too

Had a preparatory interview with cpl today which was quite useful. He said the job was in Clonskeagh for one of three desks Ericsson, Boi or some other one I've never heard of before. Sounded like tansama world?

Yep the guy from cpl said this aswell. He said dont avoid the fact that your studying computer programming just convince them your interested in a career in IT and trying to gather as much knowledge as possible or something along those lines. I should of just said computer studies on my cv buts its too late now, oh well.

the best desk to be on is OOH2 (ericsson and wartsila)

i worked there and during the day shifts 30 calls max, night shifts u dont really get calls til 6 oclock in the morning! so 10 hrs of doing nothing but sleeping!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1 lumpyduck

Used to work for ericsson...bloody awful!!! Pay was crap in my opinion. The people there were a great laugh to work with though. Management was really horrendously bad. Training was virtually non-existant.Cpl are a crowd of bastards too.As far as the technical aspect is concerned....I knew very little about computer issues when I started there. So to sum up...if you want a good laugh and a great social life...go and work there!...but if it is career advancement you are after, best avoid it altogether.

Dell Server support are always hiring, and the pay is considerably better than this..especially for the 247 work (almost double starting out..but most people progress to this after a while in standard server support ..which is about 26k mininim last I checked at entry level)..probably why there is so many ex HP ppl there...allegedly.
And as the_syco said..if your backround is programming..its not going to be much use in a tech support job, big up your hardware experience on the cv if you are applying for these roles.
