commando 3 (the older ones before the ppui crest was put on them)
also it has to be left in a river or something for a few months :)

thats my ideal ball and they can be hard to get so if u cant get that just get one of the newer commandos

i never found them good myself but i know alot of players that swear by them

Commando is the #1 ball for pitch n putt because its soft and spins alot when you catch it right it also only travels about 3/4 the distance of a normal golf ball which makes it ideal for pitch shots because you can nearly make a full swing at it and it wont go too far.

Yeah Commando's or if you've lots of money then Pro V1's. :)

This is probably just another urban myth - but I've heard that if you put your new commando's into a kettle and then boil the kettle it makes them extra grippy/spinny!

Haha mite try that! Yeah the Pro V1's are the best golf ball but they are very expensive. You can get them second hand fairly cheap though, they were selling them in American Golf Discount for a euro each a couple of months ago, but they sold very quick. Another myth I heard is if you leave your golf balls on the radiator they're supposed to go further, i dunno if it works or not though

Hi all most of the top players are using the proVI and a vairiation of others inc. the Calaway(Blue) maxfli elite, and nike. This is because thay changed the way they made the old commandos. The old commandos are the best balls in my opinion. If anyone has some of them i am willing to buy them from you at a good price.
I still use the old commandos but my supply is running short.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,983 ✭✭✭✭tuxy

my dad gave away all my old commandos :(

I was a scratch P&P player in my youth and always played with a commando as did most of the people I played with.

They cant be that good if you are running out of them!

Wow, what a bump this thread is getting!

I bought a load of new commandos because they are hard to get now, what shouldi do to get the best out of them? (does the leave them in water or boil them really make a difference?)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 792 ✭✭✭Dman_15

dunlop 65 or penfold ace if you can get them. Hard to come by these days

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 564 ✭✭✭WillyWonka

Slightly off topic but .... I bought a load of Ultra balls from golf works, becuase I'll still learning and no point in buying expensive balls, since then my chipping seems to have gone to the dogs?

    Could this be the reason??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,247 ✭✭✭✭6th

Could well be. I am only gonna use commando now so i get used to how they behave. I think its gonna help me alot.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,987 ✭✭✭Trampas

It was boiling water with a bit of salt in it was what i was told.

I have still loads of them lying about the house but all have some form of damage (Skin cut on them).

Thats what happens when you use a 60 degree club and playing it with an open stance to cut the &rse of it.

Haven't played P&P in years. Golf took over. Remember playing in Dublin, Leinster and All Ireland finals.

The waiting list on scratch cups use to be a couple of hours. We use to drink while waiting. Not good

I used to play a lot years ago too.

I agree with the commandos (before the PPUI logo came on them). I used to also like the Apollo (the really old ones with the red stripe) but they were illegal for a long time. The newer Apollos were crap (by new I'm talking new 15 years ago).

I also remember the Dunlop 65 but I think they were also illegal for competiton because they were so old they were a smaller size than the Commandos.

By personal favourites were Penfold Commandos and Criterions - very hard to get though.

There used to be nothing better than searching for pitch and putt balls as a young fellow and finding a commando that had been lying in mud for a year or 2 untouched. The older and deader the ball the better.

ah denachoman a man after my own heart. best feeling ever when you find one of those commando's. we used call them a deadner. i found a warwick its a dunlop 1965 and an apollo but have since lost them :( my choice would be a penfold tornado. rare as fook and i never owned one until now that is. just bought 12 of them online. cant wait for them to arrive so i can start using them. vintage **** !!!!!!!!would generally agree with most on this thread. the older the deader the better. any commando 10 years old or more.............hang on o it for dear life.

I won two national strokeplay titles with Callaway Hexagons, they don't cut up in the way the prov's or commandos do. A phenomenal ball to putt with and an all round great feel.

thanks for the tip whodini. i will take it on board. here,s another question. i am a scratch player and knock the ball around comfortably at 51-52 any suggestions as to where i can start entering compations, nationals leinsters? i play for a local club but only play against ourselves. I'd like to start testing myself and seeing how far i can go!!!!

The PPUI website is the best place to start - http://www.ppui.ie/ - it's the governing body for the game in Ireland.

Your local club is probably affiliated to it, and that means you have an official handicap. Based on it, you can enter any of the competitions listed on the website. Scratch cups are a great way to pit yourself against other players of a similar standard, and it's always nice to play other courses too.

The nationals were the best competitions I ever played in - especially the Inter stroke play - there was a three way tie and we had a nine-hole playoff. Two of us remained tied and we played sudden-death on the 10th - a buzz like no other.

I really recommend playing in them, especially if you like competition.

off topic can someone explain numbers on balls 1 2 3 4 5 etc why?? i had a titlest 5 it felt weird lol seemed softer but i dont know

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10 cuig06

they have different numbers in case more than 1 person is using the same ball so you can tell who owns which one. doesnt reallyy count playing p&p but if your playing golf and 2 of you slice a ball in the same direction well lets just say there can be no argument :)

Hi im a first time poster here,

For that stuff about putting your golf ball in a kettle so as your ball will go further is true.
On a cold day in a practice round i would normaly have two balls out, one to play with and the other i would keep in my pocket so as to keep warm. I would switch the two balls then on every second hole

I have recently acquired 11 commando golf balls 2 have been used but the rest look brand new (not in a box though).

I have never heard of this brand before hence the research. I was pleased to learn they are quite good and wondered if they might help my game - I've been playing for a couple of years and currently have a handicap in the low twenties. Or, if these balls are so sought after maybe I should pass them on to someone they will really help, if I do can anyone tell me what they might be worth? Thanks.

Used to be a big pitch and putt player. Commando was the only ball for me.

probably a score at most, all the pp lads are using prov's,commandoes spin way too much,in fact some of the top players use nxt's as they can spin the prov's right back off the green

Heard this boiling of the ball was going on at my local club , players scoring unnatural scores , tampering with the ball = CHEATING in my book and in the rule book as for changing ball at every hole TOTAL cheating .

Just absentmindedly browsing the 'Latest Posts' tab on the front page, and about halfway down the thread I find this, having completely forgotten in in the Golf forum.

Is changing the ball every hole cheating? Didn't realise there was an issue with that.

It's not cheating in golf. You often see Pros who've had a bad putt or two, throw their ball away after holing out.

But LOL at the six year penny drop :D

No issue with changing ball after the completion of one hole and before commencing the next, you can't however change during the play of a hole unless it's damaged and you have the agreement of you player partners.
There is a one ball rule on tour that states you must play with the same type of ball throughout your round, i.e. if you start the round with a Pov1x, you can't subsitute for any other make or model of ball, again this relates only to pros on tour.

Yea Good story bout Tiger almost running out of balls in Pebble Beach 2000.
Think the story developed legs/myth to the fact the ball he was playing was a custom Nike one not available to anyone else so replacement from another player/pro shop wasn't an option

"Tiger Woods almost didn't have the balls to win the 2000 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach.

    True story.

Yes, he won by an incredible 15 shots. It wasn't even close. So why, you ask, do I dare say he didn't have the balls?

    Because he almost ran out.

    What?

Golf balls! What were you thinking?

According to a recent article in the San Francisco Chronicle by Ron Kroichick, Steve Williams, Tiger's caddy, recounted an interesting story about that 2000 U.S. Open. Woods and Williams were on the 18th tee at Pebble Beach on Saturday. That day was rainy and foggy, and there had been a rain delay earlier.

Woods drove his tee shot into Carmel Bay, then let some choice words loose that NBC captured for the viewing audience.

Williams reached into the golf bag and felt around. One ball was all he found. Without saying anything to Tiger he handed Woods the ball. He then told Tiger, "I'd like you to hit an iron, just to get it into play."

Woods already had a big lead by the end of the round Saturday. There was little reason to be aggressive, yet there was also little reason for Woods to suddenly alter his play and start playing ultra-conservative.

Woods hit a driver. He put it in play.

Williams, meanwhile, had been planning on running to the pro shop for more balls if Woods had hooked another one into the Bay.

Apparently Woods had taken three balls out of his bag in the hotel room the night before to practice putting, and had forgot to replace them.

When Woods found out the story later, he thought he would have been disqualified.

But he wouldn't have. According to USGA rules he could have borrowed a ball from his playing partner if it was the same brand and type. If it wasn't, Williams could have run to the pro shop, or had someone run to the pro shop for more balls. It would have resulted in a two stroke penalty. Tiger still would have won easily on Sunday.
