I’m not quite sure if this is the right place for posting this query but here goes.

I live fairly close to the border with Northern Ireland and about 4 or 5 miles from one of the larger BBC/ITV transmitters. If I bought one of the freeview boxes would I be able to pick up the signal and watch the extra programmes and channels that are now available.

is your analogue signal perfect? do any neighbours have a box or tried it? which transmitter are you close to?

would it be possible to get a box and if it doesnt work return it for a refund?

    Where are you?
I don't think Brougher is within 4 or 5 miles of the Border and Divis definitely isn't.
That only leaves Limavady and if thats the one you are near then and you have a line of site, you are very much in luck.
If the tx you are talking about is any of the others ie a relay, then you will most probably be out of luck.
The reason I say this is because the relay is located there probably because analog reception from one of the other main tx's is unreliable and if thats the case then Freeview which is only possible from the first three sites I mentioned would be unavailable.
That said depending on your location and with the right aerials masts and amps, you might be able to get something from any of the first 3

By the way freeview is possible in wexford and wicklow from a main welsh transmitter but it has a sea path with no major obstacles like hills in the way :)

can you receive channel 5 with good picture quality?

if you can there is a good chance that you can get freeview.

    Thanks for the posts.

The transmitter is located a couple of miles outside of Strabane which as was stated may only be a relay.
    I'm in Donegal.
I haven't heard of any of the neighbours having a box but the terrestrial picture quality is A1.

I have just checked out the official freeview site and it says freeview is not available in Strabane.

Makes you wonder why. It's probably because of people like me who live across the border and pay no license in N.I. But for terrestrial TV this hase been the case since before I was even born. --- one of the benefits of living beside the border

Freeview, or any DTT service, isn't available from the Strabane transmitter at the moment, possibly down to low service numbers (doesn't stop them in the Scottish Isles though) or lack of free frequencies - probably the latter. The chances of picking up Freeview from Brougher Mountain or Limavady is virutally nil as frequencies used for DTT from these sites are occupied by analogue RTE transmissions.

I take it from your posts you live roughly around Lifford or Castlefin?

Yeah. in the Lifford area. It looks as if I will have to wait a little longer or else beg RTE to show a few programmes that could be regarded as being interesting.

On a serious note does anyone have any contacts in Sky.
I posted a query some days ago stating how the digibox was dodgy and Sky wouldn't replace it without a £65 St. call out charge. I subsequently cancelled and I have been trying to find some way of getting Sky digital reinstalled or reconnected but at the discounted price for new customers.

As they have my tel no, bank a/c etc there is no way I can say I am a first time customer or I can't put it in my wife's name as the tel. and bank details are the same.

Anyway I am just chancing my arm mentioning this here as I know it is not the right forum

Does Anyone used or known anyone who has this free digital TV box in Ireland ?

I am curious  to find out what channels can be picked up etc

    thanks

Depends on where the box is used. You would have to be receiving a very good terrestrial signal from Wales or Northern Ireland to have any chance of picking up a freeview signal.

Thread moved to terrestrial and merged with existing similar one.

In a nut shell freeview is only possible in ROI if you have a strong analog signal( which is a good indicator that you will also get the digital one if you look for it) from either presely in wales or the 3 main DTT tx's in NI.

    s4c2
    SKY TRAVEL
    THE HITS
    TMF
    UK HISTORY
    UK BRIGHT IDEAS
    SKY SPORTS NEWS
    SKY NEWS
    BBC NEWS
    ITV NEWS
    BBC PARLIAMENT

If your aerial has a clear line of sight to the sea, it should work.
Very popular where I am. Lots of people have boxes.
    signal is 80%
    picture digitally perfect. rarely blocks.

Hoping to get TOPUP TV too.

do you know which antenna they are poining at to get freeview. I am in north dublin with a clear line of sight to the coast and would like to try.

Presely is in south west wales, it's analg gets dodgy north of Wicklow head so that would more or less rule out dtt except on very good days north of there.

Your only option is divis methinks and thats unlikely but possible if (like where DMC got DAB on the dub mountains) you have a flukey line of sight.

I got a Freeview box today (just a very basic Sagem). I'm in Arklow and through the regular aerial I get Channel 5 perfectly and the rest (BBC 1 + 2 Wales, HTV and S4C) very good most of the time.

I get pretty much the same channels as Pal has listed and picture quality is excellent although there's some blockiness and dip in signal in the afternoon.
