    Hello Everybody,

I had to tell you all about my search for a new dvd player. I just bought a new plasma and wanted to use component inputs for the plasma. So off i went and looked around and low and behold what did i find but the Philips DVP630 and to say i was impressed would be an understatement.

This DVD player can play practically any disc format and provides true-to-life picture quality. The player includes Progressive Scan (PAL) which doubles the vertical resolution of the image, resulting in a noticeably sharper picture and a flicker-free high resolution image. It also features 4x Video Upsampling which decreases distortion for a dramatic improvement in picture quality.
    Features

    VCD, SVCD, MPEG-4, DivX 3.11/4.x/5.x, CD, CD-R/RW, MP3-CD, Picture-CD (JPEG), MP3-CD compatible
    Progressive Scan (PAL)
    4:3/16:9 picture modes
    Video system: PAL/NTSC
    On-screen display
    Parental control
    Repeat track/disc/A-B
    Fast forward/backward
    Zoom
    Multi-angle selection
    Audio selection
    Subtitles selection
    Disc Menu support
    Video output
    SCART output
    S-Video output
    Analog (L+R) outputs
1x coaxial, 1x optical digital outputs
    Dolby Digital
    H43mm x W43.5mm x D23.5cm

I got all this for €99 in curries what more does anybody want. Oh and by the way you can make this a multi-region player via the remote and it will even play RCE encoded disks.

    Hope this is of use,
    TCP/IP

Just what the doctor ordered, thks for that Tcp/Ip. You dind'nt mention but I assume it plays both -/+ in the dvd format

    Cheers

IF I had have had the cash I might have pipped you at the post on that plasma(very jealous). What are plasmas like when hooked up to a cable(tv)feed?

  • Subscribers Posts: 3,703 ✭✭✭TCP/IP

Firstly i run a Sky box off my plasma very happy with it. Was a little trouble to get working to PM me when you get the screen if you have any issue.

My post does say the player plays DIVX which i personally think is the best part of this player. I have only uses + media not - so to to sure on that question.

Looks like same player in Philips shop corner Dame St/Georges St (and probably other Philips stores also?)

Might be easier than travelling to Currys.

Tcp/ip had a quick look on a site and I think it also only listed +media which is no big deal and as you say pretty cool that it plays divx. Esel probaly would but I have a dixons voucher burning a hole in my pocket and as far as I know they accept it in any of their three shops(pc wld/currys/dixons) but thanks

    Two questions:

DivX working on a proper DVD player - sounds class! Now does that mean most films I could get off Kazaa would be encoded with it? Im not v. knowledgeable on this topic! I remember having to get a whole pile of codecs to watch something on PC a while back - so what would happen if it wasnt standard DivX? Or am I confused?!

What is + and -? Is it only involving home burned DVDs?

    Thanks for the patience :o

  • Subscribers Posts: 3,703 ✭✭✭TCP/IP

First of all any divx encoded film you download will play on this player. Most of the films on Kazaa are only 700mb and will fit on a normal cd-r. The best place to get films would be throughs IRC but i can not show you how here as a banning would happen just look on the web

Bought this last night. Excellent player. Has played everything I've thrown at it. All Xvid, VCD disks, MP3's and DVD's. Mixture of disks.

Most notably the Mirror Platinum +R x4 speed from pricestorm.com worked a treat... again. (player number 8 now)

11 xvid files on one disk, no problems for this unit :)

    Would highly recommend this player.

Tesco €99, looking at that philips 32 inch tv. If anyone has any more info on it would be great.

    blobert, np. :)

    Always a pleasure. :)

Didn't know it was free delivery. However the television I was looking at is no longer in stock. Apparently its being replaced and Philips are no longer going to make them anymore. Only pure flat screens etc. now.

Hmm I dunno... anyone have anymore on this?

Well after walking down to Tesco in Rathmines the people in there just looked at me blankly when I asked about this.

Which Tesco did you get yours from Ambrose?

That place in Cork looks good, but I bet I'll have to wait a few days for delivery!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,019 ✭✭✭ct5amr2ig1nfhp

    blobert,
I got mine in the new Tesco Clare Hall. Its on the Malahide Road.

That Cork place is only 2-3 days del, I think. (free too) Order today I'm sure you'll have it by Friday.

Player looks very interesting. Any negatives to report ? Has anyone tried divx or xvid files that contain ac3 soundtracks ?

Well, after failing to get one at Tesco's I went into the Philips store on Dame/George's St. They were sold out too (till next week) but they sent me up to Arnotts where I got one for €99.

It's working fine so far with one exception, a divx(ed) movie. This looks fine on my computer monitor but quite crappy when burnt to cd and then played on the Philips. Every time there is a new shot or camera angle in the film the picture is distorted for a second or two before readjusting.

I'm hoping that this is as a result of the very crappy cd's I burnt this film to, but they have worked with other movies fine (none of which divx(ed). We shall see.

    Otherwise I'm pretty pleased.

    Hi TCP/IP
I am considering byuing this player, but I need to know if mp3 playlists can be built on screen from an mp3 cd? I would really appreciate if you could check it out and let me know.
    Thanks in advance.

You can view your MP3 collection from various folder you place the files in that is the way i do it. As far as i am aware you can not arrange them in playlist via the player but by buring the MP3 to different folders you can do it. Make sure your turn on the option for data file viewer in one of the options on the player

    Hope this helps,

That's a pity. The lower model (DVP525) has a playlist feature, I tried it. I had a feeling the 630 didn't have it. I don't know why they remove features that are available in lower models, doesn't make sense to me.
    Thanks for your reply anyway.

I picked up this item yesterday.

They also have it in Dixons. They were sold out in Arnotts, so I walked over to the Jervis centre.

I had some small problems playing NTSC encoded Div-x TV shows. But if I pause the video and select video options and change it to NTSC and unpause the video it seems to work. It may seem obvious, but if you simply set it before you play the disc it is distorted. Only playing the file, pausing it and going to options seems to do the trick.

Picked up one of these players last week mainly for divx playback. Has anyone else noticed when playing back an xvid/divx that solid color (especially black) appears a bit pixelated ? Dont think its the source files because of none of these artefacts show up when playing back on the PC.

When I rang the Philips shop on Dame st last week they said they would be getting a new stock in today. Give them a call.

I'm nearly sure they still have them in Tesco Clare Hall.

I'm still having trouble getting this to play some movies that it should be able to. I downloaded and installed the latest drivers but no change. I'll try the NTSC trick and see if it does anything.

I'm a wee bit annoyed though, I was under the impression it would play everything.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 919 ✭✭✭timeout

Looking at getting this after reading all the posts.

Is the general consense that this is a good allrounder bar not havinga an mp3 playlist feature and having to fiddle around a bit to playback ntcs encoded movies?

R0chf0rt: The blocky, artefact-laden blacks are most probably in the original DivX; if you turned the brightness on your monitor up as far as it's set by default on a TV I'd wager it would be readily apparent.

    Hope this helps,

I bought a DVP630 in Tesco, Clare Hall today.

I haven't used it yet but the manual says Region 2 only as does the plate on the back of the player.

I don't see any mention online about changing to Multi region. Any help appreciated.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,782 ✭✭✭Xterminator

Max, the region free hack is easily found on google.

however here is a cut and paste.

Region code hack posted by pharaoh^J, August 08 2004:
THIS METHOD IS CONFIRMED ON MY DVP 642-17

Put in your disc, wait til the player complains.

PRESS and HOLD STOP for 2 seconds. The dvd player will open. Press 7, 8, 9 on your remote.
    Press OKAY.
    Select 0 for region free.

If everything went okay, a 0 will appear in the bottom left corner of the screen. Congrats, your dvd player is now region free :)

(special thanks to whoever posted this hack first. i just wanted to post a confirmation that is DOES work, thanks!!!)

My one of these broke (my fault)

Arnotts gave me a refund but they don't have any more.

    Nor do Dixons or Currys.

The Malahide road is a long way away from me.

Does anyone know where still has them (Philips is even out of stock)

I might try that place in Cork but I don't want to wait days for delivery.

    Thanks

Argos have them in the current catalogue - they're 20 quid dearer at E120, but if you want it...?

Was in currys today(blanch) as I was trying to use up a voucher, they had none and according to their computer(if its to believed)their Limerick store is the only one that has them at the moment. When he checked I presume he was looking at both Dixons/currys.

Well Dwyers in Cork don't have them either so I muight just give up and buy it for the €120 from Argos. Perhaps if that Tesco still has them I might drive out on Sunday, but it seems a long way to go!

Just an update of my previous post.

This has helped with some of the Div-x items I am playing:

If the picture is very pixelated and grainy, simply choosing the video setup menu and swiching back seems to solve the problem. It has happened on a few of my Div-x discs, but 2 seconds chosing the menu and switching back, seems to clear it up. Saved me a lot of hasle trying to watch through scambled scenes.

Just to summarise in Dublin city centre..

If the philips store on Dame st does not have it..

    Try Arnotts..

or then Dixons in the Jervis centre..

Should be €99 at each place

Just to let you know Tesco ClareHall still has some, picked one up today. IF you lads in town are really pushed for one and have not transport there are about three or four bus that go right pass the door.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,088 ✭✭✭✭_Kaiser_

    Hey all,

Bought one of these 3 weeks ago...but over the weekend it froze and in the end I had to power it off/on again to clear the problem...

BUT.... since then its taking ages to eject discs (several minutes - and even then it doesn't always do it first time), and when it DOES eject them the discs are still spinning down.

Bit disappointed - I had an old black Philips player (a DVD612 I think) that never gave me any issues and is still going strong in my mam's house now.

Think it'll have to go back for a new one, but has anyone else seen this?
(I had already upgraded the firmware beforehand with the one on the Philips IE site when I got it and it worked fine for about 2 weeks so I don't think it's a problem there).

kaiser, were ya playing Divx movies in it when it froze?

You could try upgrading (or just reinstalling the current) the firmware if u have a cd recorder. The address is in the manual, i think its www.prp.philips.com or something.

  • Subscribers Posts: 3,703 ✭✭✭TCP/IP

i have not had that problem but i did have my first one last night i got a certain film on divx and even though it worked perfectly on my computer when i tried to play it on my dvd player it was a complete mess on the screen.

So all i did was download the Dr. Divx program and reincode the film and after that it was perfect.

    Hope this might help

    Hi guys,

Nope, was a regular DVD.... tried reinstalling the firmware update and it ran ok but the problem is still there unfortunately :(

    Hi Kaiser2000,

Hows it going? Long time ..

Anyway, my father-in-law bought a mitsubishi dvd player from power city with s similar issue issue only last week.
    .
He exchanged it, and the new one (same model) works normally.

My 2 cents. bring it back ASAP, for an exchange.

I managed to break my one while updating the firmware but managed to get a refund from Arnotts. I paid the extra €20 and got one from Argos which is now working fine.

Through fiddling with the settings I have been able to get pretty much everything to play so far, so I'm pretty pleased
