www.Doom9.org is your best friend for this.

I highly recommend DVD-Rebuilder, using CCE 2.5 (or QUenc). That gives far better quality than transcoders such as DVDShrink etc. Just go to the doom9 forums and take a look at the DVD-Rebuilder one. The installation instructions and needed apps are all listed there. With this method you can keep all the menus and extras and still have a good quality DVD-R at the end, even at 50-60% reduction in size.

If you need anything, or help, just write here or PM me.

EDIT: I assumed you wanted to make DVD-R's out of em. If you want DivX's etc, then check out Auto GK (auto gordian knot). Thats the easiest way for people to learn how to rip. Once again, check out www.doom9.org for their guides and informative forums.

DivX is the usual method for small files but there are plenty of other programs. I don't know if you change the quality of DivX ones but I find the ones compressed to 700mbs or so lose a lot of the quality. It's like watching a slightly old vhs.

I'd say you could keep most of the quality compressing them to about 1.5g.b's though.

I tried DivX, it's grand if you don't mind watching them at a smaller size. I don't mind!

If it's lower quality you are interested in, you could also consider EazyVCD. It takes the DVD and converts it into an Mpeg file. One average a DVD film takes around 1gig, but the quality is quite acceptable.

The software can break the mpeg file into several 650Mb chunks, so you can burn them onto normal CDs as Video CDs. And the software is incredibly easy to use.

I think XviD is great for compressing movies to 700MB. Pick a resolution of around 512x400. It's tricky compressing them though.

AutoGK + XviD and you'll have no problems. All you have to do is confiure DVD Decryptor (just the first time you use it), decrypt the VOB files and tell AutoGK to encode them to XviD.

If you have an AMD CPU, XviD will probably encode quicker for you than DivX.

lads for a complete newbie, i think point him to auto gordian knot and xvid, its too easy

xvid is at least as good quality as DivX (i'd say better), and its completely free. Therefore, its better tha DivX.

goto sourceforge.net and find Auto GK there.

    Or get it from www.autogk.net

If your going to use Xvid for 1 CD rips; i recommend the H.263 setting. Smooths out images so its better suited for lower bitrates.

If your aiming for a 2 CD rip; i would go for MPEG. Makes the images crisper so it excels with the higher bitrates.
