What are the warning signs of depression, what should someone be looking for in another person? Don't want to go into too much detail about the problem, but i'm worried this person might be depressed. How can i tell, or is there any way?

The main ones I used suffer from:
    weight gain
    insomnia
    exhaustian in morning
difficulty concentrating/confusion/poor decision making (this came much later that other symptoms though).
    Irritability (oh yeah)
    Loss of interest in activities.
    Falling grades in college.

The thing is though, when I was with people I could always put on a happy face etc. I used reserve the irritability mostly for when I was at home as well. That meant it was very hard for people to notice. They did start to notice eventually when I could no longer hack going out with them, preferring to stay at home watching TV etc. (don't know whether to attribute that to depression or the abysmal pub scene though).
