looking at DVD burner

i'm sure its all been done before but thinking of getting a dvd burner as i need a means of large file size back up and it would be cheaper than an external hdd.

also it could replace my aging liteon cd burner.

one of my main aims though is that it can deal with the latest copy protection on games. i know the latest liteon cd burners can which would cost 50euro alone but i'm hoping to get a dvd burner that could do the job as well.

because liteon have steered me well in the past i was looking at there ones

    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/DVD_RW_Drives.html

they have a 8x one that will do dual layer stuff as well which seems to be the way forward or a 12x one that doesn't do dual layer. i presume the 8x one is better?

this is also available on komplett for €95.

or would i be better off with the nec 2510 dual layer jobbie

    opinions please?

    data

I'm actually looking for a DVD burner as well.

i read some where that the nec 2510 has a slight issue with its reading and copy protection. Whether this can be fixed with firmware...i don't know.:)

i have a nec 2510 and what uve read is BS! it will copy anything fine regardless of copy protection, only issue with it is some of the cheaper 8x dvd discs only burn at 4x but according to nec this will be fixed in a later firmware

I'll stand corrected!!!! Thanks Dogz!!! Would you reccomend it over the Liteon? What made you go for the NEC?

well according to this site it can't do above

    v2.5 of safedisc

    http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Reviews/Specific.aspx?ArticleId=9803&PageId=16

are you using the same drive to read as to write

will looking at the liteon it can do the following

    http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Articles/Specific.asp?ArticleHeadline=LiteOn+SOHW%2D832S&Series=0&index=4

which might be enough to swing it for me

I read that the NEC drives, 2510 and 2500 don't support the new Ritek G05 discs at 8x speed, only at 4x. IMHO the Riteks are the best DVD-R discs available so this is one reason I'm not getting one, which I was going to as they're so damn cheep. I think I'll wait till the dual layer versions reach a little higher than 2.4x speed though. Plus there are no dual-layer discs available yet anyway.

true they only write some riteks at 4x i emailed nec and their response was:

    Dear Customer,

Currently this 8x DVD-R media manufactured by Ritek with manufacturer code RITEKG05 is set at 4x in the drives firmware. This was due to our engineers experiencing quality issues in some cases with cheaper media when setting the write strategy. The media was not of consistent quality so in order to give good write quality the speed was dropped to 4x. The speed will be adjusted in future firmwares.

    Regards

    Mark Hallsworth

the NEC 2500/2510 cannot copy any new copyprotections. I can guarentee you that.

right so that fairly nails that one shut, any other options around that price bracket that are worth considering other then the liteon, LG or MSI perhaps?

I bought one in PC world a few months back I know, what you're all thinking, PC World  ), it's a BTC DRW1008, 8x +/- and is pretty good. It only cost 115 euro in the OEM section back in March, though like the ND2500 it has problems with a lot of 8x media. I mailed their tech support and they said it would be added in future firmware revisions, though not yet. Aparantly it works with Safedisc up to V2.80

Yeah, but i can nearly guarentee it that you have to use a crack to make it playable. A perfect backup requires no crack to play the disc, and the 2500 can't do that on new safediscs etc.

    clicky linky

Frankly MF who cares? All games I play now-a-days I use cracks on....it's automatic and it's easy to do - I wouldn't let that put me off such a cheap drive.

i care as stated at the initial post in the thread, i do one is one copies of my games and prefare not to use cracks or emulation or any of that jazz.

so if the liteon is somewhat better at doing it than the NEC and is similarly priced i can't think of a reason not to get the liteon unless someone points it out to me

Well, I've just bitten the bullet and ordered the Lite On SOHW-832S from Komplett. It's pretty much neck and neck with NEC....with perhaps slightly superiour reading and an equally large fanbase for the firmware "improvements"

    p

EDIT: Think it will be a while before i'm burning Dual Layer disks. Komplett has these
