An interesting article in the latest telecomms mag has the following graphic to illustrate the cost of fibre from Tier One carriers in Europe. Obviously <cough> you need to get an IP port and some IP addresses at the end of the transit. The ESB is in this Carriers Carrier business but would charge €50k for an STM1 while the big players charge €5k . The connection costs can vary hugely . At the levels in the Graphic it seems nobody is making money so lets assume that they should be charging 4 times that .....about €20k a year for an STM-1 .

Do be mindful that the ESB charges swingeing connection fees as well .....a matter that may not be addressed by Dermot Ahern before he leaves office and which may therefore have to be be left to steam on the new ministers desk until the Autumn :D

London-Frankfurt is about the same distance as Dublin-London .

The rest of the Article is Here including the interesting snippet that capacity in the EU accession states (to which we cannot have comparisons by ministerial edict) has grown far more than that of the older EU members.

    Two points:
    1. The growth percentage figures on its own can easily mislead about the situation. While the accession countries may have higher percentage growth, this probably originates from a much lower base. See my post about a similar situation: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?postid=1789587#post1789587
the EU accession states (to which we cannot have comparisons by ministerial edict)
    2. Ahern was right to exclude the accession states from the "bb enduser access and uptake comparison" directive.(Where the DCMNR directed Comreg to achieve for Ireland to be at average EU level or better with regards to bb enduser access and uptake by Mid 2005). While two of the accession countries (Estonia and Slovenia) are more advanced with bb than Ireland, the other eight are not. And some are in such a poor state of affairs with regards to bb that it was important to exclude all the accession countries from the average comparison.
