New machine - Decision time

I'm going to get a new machine, it's been on my to do list for a while now and until about a 2 months ago I was sure that I was going to get an AMD64 but I hesitated... Now the problem lies in that AMD are changing their CPU pin configuration again, so that if I do go for one of the current generation of machines then upgrading the processor in the future could be awkward. There's also the issue of driver availability, to any of the posters here who have the AMD64, is it worth going for them? I mean do you notice a quantum leap in performance?

Any guidance on this issue would be much appreciated.

    Thanks
