Dish, Sky + box, no card - what channels can I get?

I have recently been offered a Sky Digital disk and SkyPlus box for free(ish!) from a colleague who is relocating to the U.S. From browsing the discussion forum I got the impression if I connected them up and pointed them at the Astra satellite at 28.3E I would be able to receive the list of FTA channels mentioned in Sticky's thread on tuning in BBC channels.

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=104748

However upon asking in a TV store over the weekend the manager suggested when he setup his Sky box without a card he got no channels at all. (I explained in advance I wasn't interested in subscribing!!)

Can anyone clarify? The house had a satellite dish previously so all internal wiring is in place

    Thanks

If the dish is pointing at the right satellite (Astra 2 at 28 degrees) then you will be able to pick up all of the FTA channels (including all the BBC channels) without any card.

The recording functions of the Sky+ box do need a card and subscription though.

Will they work with an FTV card?

It is unlikely, as the FTV cards will not have been set up on Sky's billing system.

There are some people in the UK who have cancelled their subscriptions except for the Sky+ one effectively leaving them with a FTV card and Sky+.

    Simple, basic question!!

Does "2degrees" mean 28degrees on the compass i.e. NNE direction or does it mean 28 degrees to the horizon and if so in what direction?

Or does 28E mean 28 degrees to the horizon pointing East?!!

    Thanks
