clock restarting

I'm running 10.3.3 at the moment and my clock keeps restarting every time I start my machine. It might go 2 or 3 weeks without getting used.

    Are there any known issues?

Also I tried to run the software update and it told me I had nearly 100 mb's to download, (about 20 mb are just iLife stuff) which I am not worried about. The prob is I'm only on a 56 k line. I have access to a DSL connection work though,is there a way to check what updates I need (similiar to the way windows lists them) and then download them in work and throw them on a thumb drive.

I have to keep resetting my computer after pulling the plug or a power cut happens. I think it is due to the memory battery being used up. Afaik there is a small battery that is for the clock/memory that needs replacing every few years. I'm not 100% on that though.

As for your second question, I'm interested in knowing that too, if anyone can fill us in.

It's a notebook so it is meant to be unplugged, it's less than 6 months old, I'd be pretty pi$$ed if the memory battery is gone, then are ment to give 3 years give or take.

it' not a big issues, but I'd prefere not to have it.

Gillo, is it a G4 Powerbook? Gordon, whats yours?

And, yeah, it sounds like the date & time battery

    G3 iMac slot loading.

Are date/time batteries easy to change? Presumably I'll have to get mine put into the shop as opening her up is a b*tch.

had to get a replacement (PRAM) battery for a PM 9500 earlier in the month, a 1/2 AA 3.6V Lithium Battery... iMacs use the same type... managed to get one from Battery Shed in the UK for about Eur 9.50 in total delivered... Maplins or Peats may also stock them

replacement involves getting at the guts of the machine, so it's not fun on an iMac alright, but it is even less on a PM 9500 ;)

need to take the necessary precautions to prevent Electro-static discharge etc., and in particular fitting the battery the right way around. Apple have iMac battery install instructions available here [pdf] so you can see what is involved

Ah those 9500's the art of how not to build a computer. Installed ram and batteries on them many a time. Ditto from the Quadra 800 up. The worst cases ever. But kinda pretty.

If its the iMac I'm thinking off, you'll have to remove the bottom plastic cover and the EMI housing (metal thingie under the plastic) to expose the date and time battery (on the logic board). Dubwireless is right though, if you're anyway near the logic board make sure you're grounded.

As for the update issue, doesnt Software update not tell you what files its going to download? Or is that 10.3.4? :dunno:

Oh, and gillo if it has gone and it's six months old you can get the machine fixed under warranty.

I had to replace a battery etc in a 9500 and managed to slice open my fingers doing it - you know those small, sharp pieces of metal which guide one side of the casing into the other? Yep, sharp as jaysus razors.

Pretty? Man, you must have REALLY bad eyesight.

Apple support has a list of downloads which I think would be the same as in Software Update.

Thanks Nyum Nyum, thats very kind of you. Actually I have internet now in my new place and I don't really want any of the upgrades tbh. Thanks for that though!
