Where to get Dreadlocks?

    Hi,
Probably the wrong forum but I saw a hairloss one below, so I kinda figured...
Anyway, Ive been growing my hair for ages with the hopes of getting dreads. Now that its finally long enough, I was wondering wheres the best place to get it done. Cos I dont think Ive got the patience to do it naturally, I was kinda hoping to go the dreadwax route.
Can anyone recommend "good" places to get it done? Preferably if youve had them done before and your experiences etc. Some friends have had it done by Africaans and werent overly happy with the results.Which is fair enough as the people who did them probably arent used to straight Irish hair.
Oh and what kind of price range would I be looking at?

    Cheers for any help

I said i didnt have the patience to do it naturally. I have actually gone to dreadhead hq and acquired some dreading wax but I've heard its better to get it done professionally the first time as they will set faster. I have tried google before but no results. Everything seems to point to going to london to get them

I was asking the same question a couple of months back, all around town. Turns out only 1 place does them here in this city, and when I questioned them about it, they didn't really seem to know entirely what they were talking about.

So i'm stuck with 2 choices - go to a hairdresser in the town who doesn't necessarily know what i'm looking to get done, or go with someone in a house, who I have no comeback with if things go wrong.

    Go to wigsRus or wigworld.

or else just stop a dreaded individual on the road and ask them!

    Question 1: Are you Black?
Question 2: Are you a Rastafarian?

If you answered no to these questions then what are you thinking? Dreads on white people look stupid. They are part of a culture and a religion, not just a hairdo.

Plus they make you look like a crusty. Nasty.

thats so racist ... white people can have dreads too.

if Beyonce can have straight blonde hair why can't a white guy have dreads??

I'm doing the same ... but going oh natural. Didn't have the patients before but going abroad and salt water turns my hair mad curly so no point in fighting it ... can't be bothered with the straightners.

Dreads are just handy ... mind you without the salt water I couldn't do it naturally ... thats crusty. I don't really see the point of gettin it done with wax... seems like alot of fake bother for something that is supposed to be stress free!

How is it racist? Its a cultural thing. People don't understand the significance of dreadlocks. They aren't a fashion thing they are a religious and cultural thing. And if you aren't a jah rastafarai then you have no need to have dreadlocks. Mainly though, i think they just look stupid on white people, cause A) We don't have the hair for it and B) they make you look like a crusty. And lets face it, thats not a good look.

And beyonce changes her hair every week, and you want to know how? Its called a weave. Thats right, its not her real hair. OMG Thats like so Krazy...

Ahh come on now Rezmond, you're just jealous cause you have red hair. I've seen you attempt at dreads and I'm truly sorry it didn't work out.

Red hair huh. Hmmm. Drugs are bad mmmkay.

Yeah, just a hunch but I'm assuming you're the reggae DJ Rez? Judging from your post ranting on about dreads being part of religion and not fashion.

Well actually I'm a working stiff. I used to DJ but that was mainly House and Techno and Big Beat. I'm not a Ragga fan, never was, cept for maybe Buju Banton.

And if I was white I'd be more concerned with looking like a crusty than anything else. Plus Dread are nasty, did you know that dreads are breeding grounds for all sorts of lice and crap. Cool if you don't mind feeling things crawl around your head.

Ahh yeah, the Rez I thought you were works aswell but DJ's at a Reggae night in TBMC.

He's right though. White people with dreads are so 1992. They just remind me of dirty b**tard crusties.

Seriously, dreads just look stupid on white people. Machiavellianme, if you are white don't do it. I mean, just have a look at these fools:

machiavellianme dont mind half the f*cking redneck **** here. Ireland is full of sad norrow-minded f*ckers both from Dublin and the country and boards.ie is no different. If you come accross a place let us know. I might get them in myself.

honestly though, i think it just depends on the person, not the colour of their skin, i mean this applies to anything, black people are forever trying to straighten thier hair with horrible chemicals to achieve a ''white look'', i mean really, who cares, its just hair at the end of the day, no point in being so serious about it, i mean there are plenty of non-white people that get them and could be 1o,ooo miles away from jamaica and not know thier zion from their lion......peace all...;)

    Heya,

    Where: "Studio Zee"
    (upstairs)
Street: "Moore's Street, Dublin 1" - Directly opposite ILAC ergress point
    Who: "John" 087 655 1779
Damage: Depends how long your hair is. My hair was about 10cm past my shoulders and really thick. It was dead straight which makes it harder than wavy fair. €100. He wanted to haggle and started at 1m dollars. I got him down ;). You could be looking at anything between €80-120.

There is alot of people in this town who call themselfs Dread Gurus because they went to Australia for a year and got dreaded had a lesbian affair and set up shop in George's street arcade and live the life of the krusty. I'm not hear to preach about dreads. I've had them for 13 months now and they are half way down my back. I do alot of SCUBA diving as I'm a Dive MAster so my Dreads get wrecked by getting in and out of a dry suit. At present they are a bit natty and in need of some fixing. I generally get them fixed every 3 months to keep them neat as I work in a fairly conservative environment.

If you have any further questions just PM me
I am in no way affiliated to Studio Zee. I give the info because everywhere else is just useless in my experience.

    cheers gom,
Thats exactly what I wanted to hear. I'm not too worried about the price as long as theyre good, but seeing as your talking from experience, thats good enough for me.Especially seeing as your hair sounds similiar to the way mine is now, ie thick, long and straight.

God your an idiot. Think before you speak, why are dreads a breading ground for lice, i wash mine everyday in the owl deep blue ocean and when i get back u can buy a special shampoo for them.

Anyway just go natural with them although i dont like the idea of putting all that wax in your head. I got them done over here in Thailand for a tenner. Make sure you backcomb them in cause the knots way doesnt really work that well. Go to dreadhead hq and that will tell u how to do it, it took one of my mates about 4 months to get his going and it aint much work.

khmmmm--- i used to hv dreadlocks- and i want em back on y head- it is really handy if u hv em - dont hv to look after hair anymore- i know how to make them - but no chance to put them back by myself- so if somebody knows hv to do it - or knows maybe smby who makes em tell a friend =)))
i hv sene on street ppl with brushed dreads which look good- but theres another way to make t=dreads- without any wax thing..... but hurts more but it is worth that....
all u nee dis patience- the thing is they make them with crochet- first u brush the hair( make a small brushed dread) and after thet u go millimetter by millimieter with crochet and sort of sew it all together in one small cute dread....it stays forever and u dont need to put any wax so it costs less- but damages hair a lot- that means b-fore doing anything u hv to make up the mind - wether do it or not- couz if u make them that way thay will stay like that forever!!!!!
u can see how do crocheted dreads look like!!!

While Rastas may have made locks more well known, they have been worn for nearly 3000 years, and not just by Africans/Rastas. I do hope that people view them as more than a fashion statement, because they are much more than that, but I wouldn't go so far as to say 'white peope shouldn't wear them'
