Bicycles and Trains?

I know that Irish Rail have some provision for travelling with bicycles on trains but I'm wondering how the other rail operators in Europe are with cyclists? I plan on heading away in a month or so to France, it'd be awesome if I could take the bike with me to travel to those awkward places while still being able to have the train for those long-haul journeys. If anyone has got any general pointers on cycling around France or travelling by rail there then please let me know!
