my laptop screen is broken/cracked, it's a dell inspiron 8200 (no warranty). are they expensive to replace? or am I better off investing in a CRT monitor and accepting that I no longer have a "portable" computer?

i don't go out much, but still.. it'd be nice to be able to move it around

yeah, they're the most expensive component of the laptop, pretty much.

all i can suggest is to try looking aroud places like ebay, maybe someone has a knackered 8200 with an intact screen.

    they are unbelieveably expensive.
A year or two ago, one of my minions cracked the laptop screen on a Compaq E500 which was worth about 800 euro at the time.
Replacement screen? That'll be €450 please.

    Buy a rucksack.

Get a 2nd hand pocket pc and run the laptop through terminal services when you want to go out and about. I find it works reasonablywell if you have Nyidot or another virtual display proggy on the pda.

You will look wierd tho :D

HAH, I just turned it on and the screen still works.. except for this monstrous black crack going from one corner to the other, hehe. it looks funny.
