'Virtually all of the 24 cast have been axed as part of a major overhaul of the show, it has been confirmed.

Only Kiefer Sutherland will be back to reprise his role as Jack Bauer in season four, premiering January 2005 in the States.

The news means that James Badge Dale (Chase), Elisha Cuthbert (Kim), Carlos Bernard (Tony), Reiko Aylesworth (Michelle) and even Dennis Haysbert (David Palmer) will all be given at best just a few appearances in the new season.

Speaking at the TCA's summer press tour, executive producer Joel Surnow confirmed that the only other returning actor will be Geoff Pierson, who played Palmer's Republican rival John Keeler in season three. Come season four, Keeler will have taken over from Palmer as President.

Surnow also revealed that Jack will no longer be working for CTU.'

So...what do you all make of this? Personally, I'm sceptical to an extent, yet somewhat pleased. 24 definitely needed to move on and remove most of the clutter (e.g. Palmer - who really should've became a bit part after Season 1 - the plot with his wife was ludicrous and difficult to believe.)

Any opinions? Ideas? I haven't seen the end of season 3 - is there any hints as to where Jack will be working?

bad idea, in my opinion. okay some of the characters could go, but not everyone. they should definatly fit Palmer back into the storyline somewhere, because he's one of the stronger characters, especially now that Sherry is gone(and about time too).

I think it will start off with Jack on an assignment in a foreign country, like when he went to Bosnia. he told Kim in the last episode that he had to go away for a while, so maybe thats why.

ok i was just seeing if it worked, now for more of detailed reply.
God i hope season 4 lives up tothe standards of the first season. That was ground breaking tv. The last 2 seaons have had ridiculous subplots which bare no relevance on the outcome of the main storyline eg everything involving the president. Every character in the first series was involved in the central plot. Come on Jack get back on form fro season 4.

I liked the two separate storys in this season. I thought it worked well.

Political Intrigue + sh*t loads of action = great show.

I think that season 4 will revolve around President Keeler, who I'm guessing will be a bad egg.

I propose a Prequel that will let Sherry back into the show.

It would be great to see Nina and/or Sherry back in the show, but thats just wishful thinking, IMHO.

Good that Chase is being gotten rid of, but he´ll no doubt be replaced by a character whose development will be just as poor as that of Chase.

All the good 24 characters, Sherry, Nina, Mason, Tony, Palmer, are gone and the characters replacing them just aren´t the same. :(

I wouldnt be suprised if even Jack is killed up at the end of season 4 :D

Another report - seems like next year is the final season. From Dark Horizons:
With reports that only Kiefer Sutherland is returning next season for the fourth time around on "24", more details have emerged in a new article from Variety.

"Dennis Haysbert's David Palmer character will no longer be president of the United States. Instead, when the action resumes, Sen. John Keeler -- last seen trying to blackmail Palmer -- will be the new president. Geoff Pierson, who played Keeler in multiple episodes last season, will reprise his role for season four. It'll be a recurring part, however. Sutherland's Jack Bauer will no longer work for CTU".

Meanwhile 'Regiment' drops in a few more details about what some of the jettisoned members are getting up to otherwise:

"Everyone has been shown the door, aside from Kiefer. Elisha Cuthbert was asked to stay on, but she balked - having just signed a couple of lucrative movie deals. Elisha Cuthbert is in talks for a certain superhero film - sans the blonde - which just had a change of director.

Reyiko Aylesworth has joined the cast of "CSI in a recurring role next season. Carlos Bernhard (Tony) has also been keeping pretty busy and he himself has a couple of projects to go on with - including things he's developing, and Joel Surnow's doing a 24 feature DTV. They're going to be adding some big name co-stars to the mix though I hear. This is pretty much considered to be the final season".
