    Hi everyone,

Installed Debian Sarge on my machine.
But X doesnt seems to be happy with my graphics card
    ATI Radeo 9200

Googled couple of sites, tried their solution but didn't work at all.

    downloaded the drivers from www.ati.com
aliend it to .deb file but all in vain.

Screen flickers for 3 times and ends up in the commadn prompt.

If any one you know about tweaking it please let me know. I am happy with 2d accelerations on my desktop, I don't play any games. I just want my X-desktop.

    Thanks everyone,
    Cheers,
    RHN

Look in /var/log/Xfree.0.log for (EE) lines - these are the errors that are preventing X from loading. Post them here and we'll have a look.

    Hi oscarBravo,

I don't know how to copy the /var/log/X****.log file and mail it to forum.
The contents of the file is too much.

I am posting it from my Windows.

There are many kernel versions on the boot menu,Could you please please tell me how to remove them and keep the latest kernel ?

I will try to get the log file. I tried to copy into floppy , but when i saw that in windows , the file wasn't there.

    Got into trouble :(

    will try again,
Thanks for your help and reply
    cheers,
    RHN

Your mouse isn't set up properly.

Look in /dev and see where the mouse device is - you have it set to /dev/mice in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4

Its probably either /dev/mouse or /dev/psaux, but I'm not familiar with debian so I'm not sure exactly.

^ What max said. Probably the best option to choose is /dev/input/mice - this should allow the use of any pointing device connected to the system.

what you both(oscarBravo and Max) are saying is the problem is with /dev/mice and not with the graphics driver or anything.

    If I set it to /dev/mouse /dev/psaux , X display will work .

do I have to run any

    dpkg -reconfigure <package name>

My question is to set this correct , which package has to be reconfigured.

    Thanks very much,
    RHN

    su to root
open up /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 in your favourite editor
    #nano /etc/X11/XF86Config-4

find "/dev/mice" in the InputDevices Section

    Change it to /dev/input/mice

    save

    #startx

    see if it works.

If not, change that /dev/input/mice to /dev/mouse and try again.

If that doesn't work, change /dev/mouse to /dev/psaux (it is a PS/2 mouse, right?). And try again. If that doesn't work, come back here and let us know :)

    EDIT:

You do have a problem with your graphics driver - your kernel module isn't loading, so you won't have any 3D acceleration. But that's not what's causing X to fail.

In my experience, X is one of those things best left hand-configured. dpkg seems to know this: it keeps an MD5 checksum of the configuration file it created, so it can tell if you've modified it. If you have, it won't overwrite it.

Short version: once again, ^ what max said. :D

changed and tried out all the combinations.......

removed fglrx.*.* package and configured with XFree86 ATI , didn't work. So kept the partition as it is and installed FC 2 successfully.

    XFree86 Log file is attached.......

Hope you all give me some clues to tweak to get my Xwin for debian.

    can you post up "/etc/X11/XF86Config-4"

at a guess, I'd say try to remove the line "LoadModule DRI" but I can't be sure until I see the config file.

Look for differences between the FC2 XF86Config-4 and the Debian one. Or run Knoppix on your box and see how it handles your setup.
