DVDs from computer on TV?

I'd like to watch some DVDs using my computer's DVD drive, but watching them on TV. This is supposed to be easy, but I've failed to get it to work. If anyone has done it, how's it done?

I've tried connecting an S-video cable from my PowerBook to a SCART connector plugged into the TV's SCART socket; the S-video cable only had four prongs whereas my PowerBook's S-video in has seven holes - this may be a problem.

Tried the same setup on a neighbour's laptop; he's running Windows and Linux, so we booted in Windows and tried playing the DVD on both Windows Media Player (nope!) and the player that came with his laptop - can't remember the name of the software, I'm afraid. Didn't work, anyway.

If this is ridiculously easy to do, please tell me how it's done.

cxan you get your windows desktop to apper on your TV? If you can't, the first thing you should do is tell me what model graphics card you have.
