Does anyone know exactly how much you are charged if you are caught getting electronic goods into the country from america or canada. I looked on the net and couldnt find anything. Is there a site that tells you this?
I want to know exactly how much is charged cos i wont bother if it ends up being more than over here

Goto revenue.ie and select "leaflets and guides" and under "customs and excise" there are loads of documents relating to duties and charges for importing/exporting goods

You are charged the full duty on the Irish Retail price. If the product is not yet available in Ireland then the goods will be held until a price can be determined and then you are charged accordingly.

    ie...USA price paid = €150 approx ($ equivalent)

    Irish price = €200

    Duty (vat) in Ireland = 21% = therefore you get charged 21% * €200 (irish price) = €42

    Total price paid = USA price of €150 + Irish duty = €42 = €192 saving €8

You also risk getting a fine on top, but thats rare unless you're importing restricted goods or quantities for resale.

Thanks so its 21% on all electrical goods. Whats the chances of getting through customs without paying anything?

Very good unless you're unlucky like me !

I brought a digi camera in from the States last month - didn't even think of the consequences - just saw it cheap and bought it.

Came through Customs in Dublin & the fella does a routine search (must've been the dark glasses- ) - anyway, he came across the camera & says

" Did you buy this in the USA sir" - no says I, thnking - I'm so cool watch me outsmart you....

"Well says the customs guy - you do know that this model hasn't been released here yet don't you"........Doh!

Anyway, he was an understanding kinda guy & just charged me the Irish VAT - which still made the camera cheaper.

Only thing you should check is the 'personal goods allowance' - the value of goods that you are allowed to bring in...they can be sticky on that and confiscation is not undeard of !

You could have just said you bought it off the net before you went to america, and brought it with you on your trip, and had already paid the import tax.

Could have done with hindsight, but when you're on the spot with a Customs Official.....didn't quite come to mind

I bought a set of golf clubs in the states a couple of years ago and I played a few rounds to make them look used you know. SO I'm coing back through Dublin airport and this Customs and Excise guy asks me to come with him.

Now I looked like a mess, I had about 2 hours sleep the night before my flight cause I went on the lush with my brother and by the time I landed in Dublin from JFK the hangover was really kicking into full affect. So I wasn't in a great mood.

So the guy is rooting through my clothes, generally making a mess and then he asks me to open my golf bag, which I do and he says to me
"Oh they look very new sir"
to which I replied "yeah, I got them a few months ago"
    And he said
"I didn't think you could get these clubs in Ireland yet." Which is probably true cause they were a brand new set and very good clubs and had litterally just come on the market.
So I said, "You can't, I got them in Hong Kong." So he let me go.
