When I connect to the net most times no pages will open, msn logs in, sometimes irc will connect but no web pages will open, they timeout. Another PC can connect using the same phone line and cable, so it must be something with my modem or settings but I dunno what it could be

    Hi Dempsey,

The fact that MSN and IRC is working means that you're connected. The problem seems to be restricted to your Web Browser. (Sorry if I'm stating the obvious - I'm thinking out loud)

    Try the following :
    1) ping 194.125.133.10
This is indigo.ie's nameserver and the point of this is to establish that you are, in fact, connected to the Internet. If you get ping replies then you're connected.

    2) ping indigo.ie
This is to see if you can resolve domain names to IP addresses. If you have a problem with this step then there is probably a problem with your DNS settings. I think this is unlikely however as I imagine that IRC and MSN use URLs rather than explicit IP addresses and you don't appear to have problems there.

    3) Go to a Command Prompt and type "telnet indigo.ie 80".
When you (hopefully) connect type "get" and press return twice.
If you get some text back then you can connect to the indigo web site.

If you pass the above tests and are still having problems then I'd suggest comparing your browser settings to the other PC that is not having a problem. Or else post some more information about your OS and Browser.

    Regards,

    Liam
