You should be looking at amd 64, a good motherboard nforce3 250gb msi or epox, 1gb of good ram ocz , dvd writer, sata hdd 160gb +, a good graphics card (nvidia 6800 GT 256MB GDDR3) or ati x800pro, a good sound card Creative SB Audigy 2 ZS, a good speaker system 5.1 or 6.1 or 7.1 system. a good monitor 17" + (tft or crt).
You should research all the stuff you want before buying it.
    i.e tft or crt monitor.
Check some of the hardware review sites for their views on certain pieces of hardware.
and before I forget a heatsink and fan and a case dont get a cheap rubbish case its best to buy a good quality case (chieftec are good) and powersupply (stay away from qtec) 450W+ psu.
I cant recommend a good heatsink.

You should be able to get a meaty system for 1600. Go for either an a64 3200 or a P4 3.2c. A zalman 7000u is a good heatsink and is pretty quiet. If you want the best get the thermalright sp-94 for a p4 or the sp-98 for the a64 with a good 92mm fan. You only need this if you want to do some overclocking.

Everything Arginite said then except get a audigy 2 LS. I't's less than have the price and just as g0ood except it only supports up to 5.1 surround but not many use 7.1 anyway.

I personally wouldn'tgo with a chieftec case. They are big and bulky and weigh a ton. Great sturdy cases but not practical for moving about. Pick whatever you like as long as it has ecent airflow.

You want a 2x 512mb kit of pc3200 RAM. Get it from www.shop4memory.co.uk They have the cheapest prices and free delivery. I recomend the mushkin kit with the 2-2-2 timings.

Everything else can be got from www.komplett.ie or www.jescomputer.de

Depends what you want to use it for. A64 is better for games

I was using a P4 2.66 before i switched to An AMD 64. Despite the lower clock speed it ran faster, the 2.8 was a dell 2400  .

Have a look through this thread. Some detailed replies and generally good advice :)

The a64 will give you slightly better frame rates in games and the p4 is better for video encoding and 3d rendering. They are pretty much even for everything else.

Either way you won't be disappointed and you won't notice the difference.

I don't know which a64 mobo's are good, just make sure it's an nforce3 250. If your going intel get an Abit ic7.

Games would be my main reason for upgrading....AMD64 sounds like it would have better use in the future with the 64bit applications on the horizon

I endorse the AMD's 64. The P-4 is fater for video encoding and 3d rendering but thats one of the few things AMD 64 got benchmarked in its 64bit format and it proved to be faster. But a fully 64bit OS is till a small bit off. Games are not going appear either till next year but its still and excellent cpu. If your overclocking I would go with a thermalrigt heatskin alright.

If your not too interested in having super gaming machine no need to buy the x800pro or other top end gfx card. Just get a resonably priced (9700/9800pro, 2nd hand from boards maybe?).

Definitely get the amd64 imo, ive been very very happy with my one.

A good power supply is vital, one component not to skimp on!
