    The Killers - Hot fuss

    Hmm Scissor Sisters?

You have heard their version of comfortable numb!! No self respecting musician would do that to such a masterpiece. They dont deserve a listen!!!

So based on one bad cover - you don't give a band a chance with anything else?? You're very clever, and obviously know better than everyone else.

Best album of 2004 (IMO) - Prince - Musicology.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 216 ✭✭gogul

Dr Loon, u think of one of your favourite bands. If a cover was done of one of their best songs (very badly I might add), wouldn't u be p*ssed!?

Yes, obviously you are correct. Its awful - what was I thinking? I'll change my nomination to Pink Floyd - Echoes (almost this year). Pink Floyd rule all.

..........or..............no - i think its great and you can eat my ass-biscuit. :p

Probably have to go with Vol.3 The Subliminal Verses - Slipknot. Very little else released this year that has been very good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,482 ✭✭✭RE*AC*TOR

might I add - I prefer the Scissor Sisters version of Comfortably Numb - its sufficiently different from the original to merit being a cover - surely that's better - putting their own stamp on it rather than doing an almost identical version to PF.

Did u also like Tori Amos' version of Smells Like Teen Spirit?

  • Moderators Posts: 6,900 ✭✭✭Spocker

+ 1 for the Scissor Sisters - brownie points for being (mostly) original if nothing else. I agree with RE*AC*TOR , at least it's different enough :p

Silver Mount Zion Memorial Orchestra and Tra La La Band with Choir - Thee Rusted Satellites Gather and Sing.

Broken Social Scene's You Forgot It In People which only got an Irish release this year.

    Sonic Nurse also excellent.

    tool-lateralus.....WITHOUT A DOUBT

I like the scissors sisters cover, I actually prefer It to the original. Good album too.

The Franz Ferdinand album was brilliant , very 'paint by numbers' but still really good.

Listening to Razorlights album ... seems quite good so far.

Not really... but I wouldn't write the rest of the bands material off as shíte based on a bad cover version.

If Comfortably Numb was an original song by Scissor Sisters, people would absolutely love it. But because they're revamping a classic by a hugely succcessful and much-loved 'serious' (though that's arguable!) band, everyone gets all stuck up and elitest about it.

    Get over yourselves.

At the risk of being totally unfashionable, I've just bought Morrissey's new album and it actually sounds great. Must also pick up Prince's new one too - roll on the 1980s!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,945 ✭✭✭D-Generate

The words Morrissey and unfashionable don't go together in the same sentance.
Anyway, my favourite albums so far are
Hope of the States - Lost Riots
    The Killers - Hot Fuss
    and Interpol - Antics.

Beastie Boys - To the 5 Bouroughs is also pretty Fab!

    Keane - Hopes and fears

Incubus- a crow left of the murder

album of the year? I'm sorry, has to be albumS of the year:

Sonic Youth - Sonic Nurse (far better then their previous few albums)
    Einstuerzende Neubauten - Perpetuum Mobile
PJ Harvey - Uh Huh Her
    Throbbing Gristle - Now
    Neurosis & Jarboe - Neurosis & Jarboe
Michael Gira - I Am Singing To You From My Room

Of course there are others that are not as good but worth a mention such as Morrissey, Amen, all the Tindersticks re-releases, Hafler Trio and Merzbow.

Biggest disappointment was that new Lou Reed live album. There are a few great tracks on it but most of it was fairly rubbish. The gig he did at the Helix was better because he talked less crap through it. The vocalist he had with him, Antony, is amazing. Best version of Candy Says yet!

Yeah the Sonic Youth album is excellent (except for the that Arthur Conan Doyle Handcream track)

    Two other contenders are:

Wilco - A Ghost is Born
DJ Shadow & Cut Chemist - Product Placement (live CD with the DVD)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

    Ash - Meltdown

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,441 ✭✭✭✭jesus_thats_gre

    Jay-Z - The Black Album

Kanye West - College Drop Out

The Streets - A Grand Don't Come for Free

    Mine would be:

    Auf Der Maur - s/t
Tracer AMC - Flux and Form
    Rest - Burning in Water...

The Streets - A Grand Don't Come for Free

I would agree with this. was a bit slow to catch on but once I heard one or two of the songs off the radio i bought the album and was not dissapointed

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,618 ✭✭✭milltown

It has been a good year so far for music I think.

    My Picks:

    Keane - Hopes and fears
DJ Dangermouse - The grey album
    Franz Ferdinand
    NERD - Fly or die

I liked the Scissor sisters album the first few times but then it actually grew OFF me. I do think their comfortably numb stands on it's own, sufficiently different to the Floyd version to almost consider it original.

A grand don't come for free was a travesty after OPM.

    scissor sisters album is appauling.

franz ferdinand - take me out, is quite clearly the best album so far this year.

p.s why did keane cross the road?
    to get to the middle.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 38 kingofvillan

Forget overrated codswallop(thats right noel i said codswallop) like keane and snowpatrol, these bands are dreary enough to make me go into deep sleep

Best albums are Franz Ferdinand, Scissor Sisters and the Coral!!!

If you think the Franz Ferdinand is the best album of the year, then you would know that it is self-titled!

It is NOT called 'Take Me Out'!

It obviously had so much of an effect on you as the best album of the year that you forgot the name of it!

Personally, i thought it was a very over-rated album with plenty of filler and a few radio friendly singles going for it.

Best albums for me this year are:

    Snow Patrol - Final Straw
    Keane - Hopes & Fears
    Ash - Meltdown

    Dogs Die in Hot Cars
    Scissor Sisters
    The Streets.....

    Doing a quick compile:
Sonic Youth, Interpol and Franz Ferdinand joint leaders (3 each).
Followed jointly by Modest Mouse, Scissor Sisters, Hope Of The States and Keane (2 each).

Where someone mentioned more than one album - I took their first answer.

    Bic Runga - Beautiful Collision

this may have come out last year, me no sure

Hope of the States- the lost riots

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,592 ✭✭✭✭Dont be at yourself

Must say, Hope Of The States blew me away at Oxegen, and after picking up their album, I'd put it right up there with the best of the year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,846 ✭✭✭✭eth0_

Number one has to be 'Heroes to zeros' by the Beta Band, they're such a fantastic band and yet get ignored by the record buying public :-(
I'd actually rate them higher than radiohead in terms of innovation and lyric & melody writing skills.

Second place would be Hope of the States 'The lost riots'. Great band, can't wait to see them live in October.

Haven't heard or listened to anything released this year enough to warrant me even having a favourite album of 2004.

I guess they just don't make 'em like that used to!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,808 ✭✭✭Badly Drunk Boy

    I'd have to go with

The Streets - A Grand Don't Come For Free
The Beta Band - Heroes To Zeros
    Laibach - Wat
