Komplett do them form time to time but your better off buying from where you have already mentioned. Hvae about 8 of em here. Funky things. Looking forward to the 2.5 inch square ones.

and how big are the psu's that you use?
can you hook up an ordinary atx psu to it?
i'm gonna need to power a 3.5"hdd and 5.25 optical

Yeah 8 or 10 of the little feckers.

Very hand little test machines for farting about with but generally we use them as wireless access points (2 PCI Ahteros WLAN cards, some ram, a CF card and a HDD and a linux distro).

We are usin the in IrishWAN/SoutheastWAN as well, some of them are doing very long distance links (40k+).

linitx.com are generally cheaper than mini-itx.com. We use them for meshboxes here in Knockmore - the 500MHz variety with no moving parts, ergo greater reliability. I also have a 1GHz M10000 as my desktop running Gentoo.

i heard they can only take hard drives up to 136gigs,
and you have to buy a pci ide controller to use bigger...

    that true?

We have little PSU's (under 200w I think) that only have a couple of power headers. We also have and use full size regular PSU's. Same connector.

Havn't heard of a limit on the hardisk, BIOS upgrade would sort that anyway.

1.12. Will a 160GB drive work with my EPIA motherboard?

48 bit LBA is not supported on the first generation EPIA motherboards. The largest drive you will be able to attach is 136GB. Larger drives will be recognised as 136GB. EPIA M motherboards will support 48 bit LBA. One solution would be to use an IDE controller PCI card.

    http://www.mini-itx.com/faq.asp#Hardware11

this means i would have to spend at least £90

EPIA M motherboards will support 48 bit LBA

There's a little hint in the your quote. Just buy a Epia M board (the most widely available) and you should be fine, you might have to get a small registery edit to enable the 48bit LBA ( I did anyway) but other than that you should be fine. I second http://www.linitx.com, that's where I got all my mini-itx gear.

This is how mine ended up :)

    that's what my quote says.
    epia m, not normal epia.
    still gonna cost £90,
but its fanless, so that's pretty cool.

    here's what i'm thinking...
    a sound system!
    touch screen tft for mp3s.
hooked up to amp + speakers
capable of watching dvds, but probably won't use it for that much.

    epia m 6000 mobo
    128mb ddr - already have
    200gig hdd
    pioneer slot in dvd
old psu 200-300 watts, cut up to fit a 120mm fan
7" touch screen tft - already have

total cost [not including what i have]
    = €300-330

    WHAT YE THINK?

The slot in pioneer drive is noisey, i thought it would be great too but i wasent that impressed.

Im thinking a noise will be a factor?

Where did u get the 7" TFT?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,218 ✭✭✭davidclayton

    about 6 months ago @ www.cartft.de

i once heard that you can slow down the speed that a drive spins a disc at.
e.g. from 32x to 2x, therefore making it less noisy.

    anyone know anything of this?
    is it software/hardware/firmware???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,218 ✭✭✭davidclayton

actually i just checked cartft.de to see if they have the suitable via epia fanless mobo...

    http://www.cartft.com/shop/catalog/il/63

it's cheaper here than on linitx!

    case?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,218 ✭✭✭davidclayton

custom made to have the tft sit into / onto
[but i don't want to remove tft housing coz it might end up in a car some day]
1 single 120mm fan to cool the lot.

i'm thinking i could pick up a 200w psu here on baords for free and mod it.

    come to think of it...
how the hell will i make the case?

what is best metal or plastic?
maybe i could pick up some perspex.
    where would i get that?
