    Name of Club: Astronomy Ireland
Type of Event: Lecture & Book Launch
SPEAKERS: Brian May (of Queen), Patrick Moore, Chris Lintott
    Date: 12 March 2007, 8pm (next Monday)
    Admission Fee: €5
    Website: http://www.astronomy.ie/lecture200703.html
Location and Directions: Trinity College Dublin (directions on website)

PS - If you book tickets online, for some reason there is no confirmation page (you are just returned to the home page when you click the unhelpfully named 'BANG...' button which you have to figure out for yourself is the 'submit' button). You get a confirmation email from 'tom@astronomy.ie' with the subject 'form submission' and no text in the email itself. I booked mine Friday and had to ring today to make sure they were actually booked... Basically, don't fret if your booking doesn't appear to work.. It probably has!

    Enjoy..

    PLANET SATURN ON VIEW.

Next Tuesday Evening (15 April ) Astronomy Ireland will be assembling some of the largest portable telescopes in the country in Dublin's Phoenix Park and at various venues across Ireland to offer everybody on the island a chance to see the Rings of Saturn and its colourful cloud belts.

The date has been chosen because Saturn will be very high up in the sky and spectacularly close to the Moon that night (Saturn will be the bright 'star' just above the Moon). This is also the best time of year to see Saturn as it is very high up around 9pm meaning it will be very well seen in the telescopes at this convenient and sociable hour. All Watches around the country are at 9pm and we will be there regardless of weather so at least come along for a chat and a look at the telescopes. If time permits we will also be taking a look at some of the other wonders of the night sky through the telescopes

Further details of venues nationwide are available at www.astronomy.ie

For our "Saturn Watches" no ticket is needed - just wrap up warm and get yourself along to one of the following venues at 9:00pm -
Dublin - Papal Cross Car Park, Phoenix Park, Dublin.

    Co. Carlow - IT Carlow

Cork - John F. Kennedy Park, Cork.

Co. Donegal - Letterkenny I.T. carpark

Co. Louth - Seabank Car Park, Dundalk.

Co. Tipperary - Poppyfields Shopping Centre Car Park, Cahir Road , Clonmel

    All ARE WELCOME

Top Astronaut in Dublin to Announce Search for First Irish Astronaut

Europe's top astronaut Gerhard Thiele will be in Dublin on May 15 to promote the fact that Irish people can apply to be an astronaut in the European Space Agency (ESA). Irish citizens can apply from next Monday May 19th.

Dr Thiele flew in space aboard the U.S. Space Shuttle and now leads the ESA Astronaut Corps.

He will be in the Astronomy Ireland Telescope Shop in Artane, Dublin 5 at 2pm on Thursday May 14th for interviews and a photo opportunity.

The Astronomy Ireland Telescope Shop is one of the biggest showrooms for Telescopes in Europe. Relative to population Ireland has the highest interest in space of any country in the world. The telescopes will make a fantastic backdrop for photographs to announce the search for the first Irish astronaut.

    Solar Eclipse Tomorrow

Tomorrow morning, Friday 1st August, between roughly 9:30am and 11:00am, the Moon will pass in front of the Sun, and, depending on where you are in Ireland, up to 33% of the Sun's disk will be covered by the Moon. This is first of two eclipses visible from Ireland during August (see below).

WARNING: Never Look directly at the Sun. It can lead to permanent blindness.

Astronomy Ireland are holding 5 Eclipse Watches at various locations throughout the country where members of the public will be able to view the eclipse using safe methods and equipment. One of the Watches will be at the Papal Cross car park in the Phoenix Park Dublin. Other Watches will be held in Carlow, Clare, Donegal and Wexford. Further details are available on www.astronomy.ie

The eclipse will be "Total" as seen from parts of northern Canada, Greenland, Russia, Mongolia and China and is your last chance to view a solar eclipse from Ireland until January 2011. The next Total Solar Eclipse will not be visible from Ireland until 2090. The last was in 1724.

ECLIPSE FACTS (call for full story):
Total Solar eclipses have had profound effects on human history:
Roman and Greek empires fell as a result of eclipses
Albert Einstein is internationally famous because of the solar eclipse 1919
The current geo-political landscape in the Middle East is a result of an eclipse during the campaigns of Lawrence of Arabia.
Christopher Columbus used his knowledge of an impending eclipse to obtain supplies from the natives for his crew while stopping off at Jamaica.
Mark Twain uses an eclipse in a book. So, does Sir H. Rider Haggard the author in King Solomon's Mines.

    Other events during August 2008:
The International Space Station blazes across Irish skies until August 3
The President of The Royal Astronomical Society will give the Summer Public Lecture on August 11
The Perseid meteor show reaches its peak on August 12
A Lunar Eclipse will occur on the evening of August 16
Star-B-Q, Ireland's biggest annual star party takes place on Saturday August 30

More details of all these events can be obtained at www.astronomy.ie

    2. Lunar Eclipse Report

4 million people watched the Eclipse of the Moon with us on August 16th when Sky News London sent a camera crew to our Dublin Eclipse Watch to beam live pictures out from a satellite unit. This is the biggest audience we have ever brought an astronomical event to. A report of all the Eclipse Watches held around Ireland, and some of your photos (a full report will appear in our magazine www.astronomy.ie/sub) is now online at:
    www.astronomy.ie/ecl2008moon

    3. Lots to see in the sky

Remember, those of you who have bought computerised telescopes from us can easily find the planets Neptune and Uranus which are now well placed for viewing. Jupiter is of course the star attraction and there are loads of events involving its moons passing in front of and behind the planet, as well as its Great Red Spot (exact times of all these events every week are in the Sky Diary pages of our magazine). You can use cameras like our Celestron Neximage camera to get great photos too. Please email a brief report if you see Jupiter, Neptune or Uranus to observe@astronomy.ie and we will include you in our monthly magazine report.

Shannonside Astronomy Club will this year in conjunction with Shannon Development,
Caherconnell Ring Fort, Burren Beo & The Sky at Night Magazine
hold our annual starparty on Saturday the 26th of September in the Burren.

Formally known as the 'Whirlpool' Starparty which we held in Birr for many years,
the Starparty is Set to be a one day and one night astronomy extravaganza.
It will consist of public astronomical lectures, a telescope workshop & nights sky presentation
in preparation for an evening observing session like no other
under some of the darkest skis in Europe.

We are working closely with many of the local attractions, tourist agencies & initiatives
in the Burren to make this a very special, educational and recreational event.
    ________________________________________________________________________________

We like to take this opportunity to say that it is not without some considerable
committee discussions and debate that the decision to change the format and location
of our yearly starparty, which has become so very well established and connected with Birr was taken.
The committee would like to thank Lord Rosse for his patronage and use of the castle
grounds for the observing nights and also the Birr office of Shannon Development for
    their support over the years.

With that in mind and in the spirit of good will, the SAC committee have decided to gift
the name of our starparty to the Birr Castle Demesne and if his Lordship sees fit to continue to allow
star party's under the name 'Whirlpool' and without any affiliation to SAC to be run
in Birr and his castle grounds as before, then we sincerely wish his good self and any
future organizers of any such event the very best of luck and success.

Due to the ice and snow, which is to get worse tomorrow (Tuesday), our lecture Tuesday night posted above will be moved to Tuesday December 21st, same time, venue and topic. Please pass on this message to anyone you believe should know so as not to attempt travel.

We are sorry for the inconvenience but it is better to be safe than sorry.

    Clear (Icy) Skies,
