The Firewire port on my first generation iPod is acting up. To get it repaired by Apple would cost only slightly less than buying a new one, which I don't want to do. Does anyone know of anyone in the Dublin region doing iPod repairs?

What do you mean by "Acting Up" - can you describe the symptoms ??

I'm not aware of anyone doing iPod repairs in Dublink, sadly. So Apple is your only option unless you want to attempt it yourself. You could try having a look at the ipodlounge website, specificaly here , which shows you how to crack the case.

ironically, it's probably a 10cent component which is failing

Had to crack mine open to stick in a replacement battery - piece of p**s to do with a decent flatblade screwdriver, and sticking a new firewire port in should be handy enuff if your any good with a soldering iron.

There really is not-alot-inside them things .. although i think gen 3 ones are slightly more difficult to get open

When I connect the iPod to the Mac, the Mac does not recognise it and the display on the iPod simply says it is safe to disconnect. Naturally iTunes doesn't recognise it either. However, if I jiggle the cable the iPod does appear on the desktop and iTunes recognises. But the Mac starts behaving erratically and eventually has to be restarted. The battery charges however. Ironically, I'm having no problems with battery life so far. (And it's an original 5GB model).

Im guessing you tried a diff cable ?

Sounds like one of the data cables is prolly broken or the connector on the port not making contact,

Reason I ask about the cable is the original mac firwire data cable is really really really thin and easily broken and if its charging then the firewire port itself may not be to blame, the 12v charging cable is about 5 times thicker than the data cable!

What type of mac ? and how many firewire ports ?

Have you tried the IPOD at another machine ?
