I'm not getting screwed going to Malaysia!

I already had a holiday for 1 week in Lisbon in a four star hotel. I checked out booking on the net first before coming to the conclusion that I was saving €50 by using the travel agent. The same agent is now selling for €499 what I paid over €700 for (2 weeks ago). I checked the hotels website since and it has new button - special offers - it doesn't work!

A holiday in Malaysia was not planned at time of booking of the previous holiday. Some friends suggested this and I haven't had a 2 week holiday in 5 years - what the hell!

However this time, I am determined to get the best deal. We've booked the flights and 2 nights in KL. Again getting a better deal than what I could find on the net.

We're planning to roam Malaysia (penninsular) for 14 days getting hotel rooms as cheaply as possible (probably 3 star and above).

Does anyone have experience of this? I.e. turning up at hotels on spec in Malaysia then checking whether they got a better deal than had they booked through a travel agent? Does anyone know if there is an easy way to identify hotel offers in Malaysia (even if the site is in bahasa malay)?

This is at the end of September - mid October - planned itenerary is KL-Melacca-Penang-Langkawi. Is any of these a bad idea for any dates in this interval?

Travel Agents posing as individuals - trying to scare me into booking right now - please forget it!

Ive never been to Malaysia to be honest but heres what I would suggest:

Contact 3 or 4 different travel agents in different areas and get a price for exactly
what you're planning to do.. make note or each and then go to somewhere that
specialises in younger peoples holidays like trailfinders/USIT etc who know that the
people they deal with dont have huge amounts of cash and as such usually have
    pretty good deals..

Then research the holiday yourself.. Check out the usual forums:

    Travellers Point
    Lonely Planet
    Rough Guides

And go from there... the best way to find out is to talk to others on forums like
    travellers point and lonely planet..

But Ive found that you will never be guaranteed to get the lowest price yourself as
coming up to the time hotels/airlines etc will always cut their prices to the point
where they arent making any profit, just simply to get people in and not have a hotel
    or plane half full..

My rule of thumb.. once you book, stop looking at prices.. you'll only piss yourself
    off.. :)
