Rusty Nuts And Bolts Cleanup

My bike has many external nuts and bolts that over the years have gathered an ugly rust covering.

The actual bolts and nuts themselves seem to be fine, its only a light surface covering but very noticable.

Wondering if anyone has hints for cleaning them, perhaps there is a liquid that they could be soaked in overnight that would remove the rust?

Would then replace and probably cover in vaseline to weatherproof.

    Any ideas ?

You could clean them up pretty good with a drill mounted wire brush.. Use a clear laquer to keep them shiny.

To minimise further rusting, remove old rust with steel wool (paint shops/hardware) and carefully paint on either Kurust or Jenolite (hardware shop) following the instructions on the pack. Vaseline is a temporary solution - Plastikote sparay laquer or matching paint over the rusted items will protect for a long time. If your bike is a popular model there are a number of companies supplying entire nut/bolt replacement kits - you might be lucky - but its a tedious job.
