the above blocks something like 90% of all online advertisements, but you can get even more effective ad blocking by combining it with the AdBlock extension, available here...

wierd, it worked ok for me...

Right click on the ad, select AdBlock Image, make the location as general as possible by shortening it and using a wildcard at the end...

Note to mods: I of course dont condone this kind of thing, as the good folks at boards.ie generate income to maintain this outstanding free service throught the use of these ads by google, and I really dont want to get banned for answering a technical question...

blocking banner ads steps over the line in my opinion.
nobody likes popups but banners should not be blocked.

Steps over the line?? Jesus, I think we have the right to decide what is and is not displayed by our own browsers on our own computers.

    Over the line?!?

Kerio Firewall blocks all google ads for me on all sites for free. Happy days indeed.

After the original post above though, I'd be curious to know have their been any similar unfortunate google ads on boards.ie pages.

lol - banner ads are a bit pointless tbh - I've not clicked on any since about 2000 when I first got online and thought I'd won $20 on a "catch the monkey" game.
