How do i get rid of it short of wiping my HD (drastic or what !)

I found this happened with a mate of mine and it turned out to be a virus that was
causing it.. or at least malicious code that was recognised by an AV app..

Try updating ur anti virus and doing a complete scan..

When it keeps coming back like that a program is being run that changes the details.

a good uptodate antivirus will solve the problem along with spybot

Personally do not think you have a virus just think that your browser has been hijacked(Malware)- Run Cw shredder and Hijack this.

I had the same thing happening to me with a search engine called istarthere.com
To get rid of it download a program called spysweeper.its better than adaware or spybot and it comes with a homepage shield which keeps your homepage set to the one you want and prevents any malicious code altering it

    hope that helps.

Check your DNS entry vs. the DNS entry you ISP provides.

Some of these nasty viruses modify your name server so they can redirect requests based on the URL you enter ....
