    http://www.allofmp3.com/

Came across this amazing Russian site today from which you can download thousands of tunes (literally) at unbelievable prices!

Great when you want something rare or can't be arsed with p2p. I've already opened an account and started to complete some albums that have been roosting uncompleted on my hard drive for ages. Score! :D

The price is so measly it's worth it just to get exactly the song you want, at whatever bitrate you want and with complete ID3 tags! It also lets you choose from a multitude of formats.

Mods please note that I don't condone illegal downloading. I'm not sure if this site is even illegal but just in case.

It is 100% Legal. Russian copyright law gives them (and presumably anyone else) the right to "transmit" any material as long as they pay the set fee to the state agency who owns the rights to all material, they then distribute the royalties to the artists/record companies. The artists/publishers do not have a right to withold permission so as long as the royalties are paid to the authority it is legal.

There are some better explanations for the legalities, do a search.

BTW it is an excellent service, you can get your downloads in a range of different formats and bitrates to suit your preferences.

has anyone here actually *used* it though?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,107 ✭✭✭John R

Yes, like I said it is excellent. They have some free downloads to try on restricted bandwith.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,678 ✭✭✭Selik

I've already downloaded about 5 full albums this evening for less than €4.00...

They have alot of rarer stuff as well which is much harder to find on the likes of Kazaa, Soulseek etc.

This really is one of the best things I've come across in ages! Their download speeds are excellent as well, means I can make the most out of my 512k connection! ;)

is there any DRM crap in the files?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,496 ✭✭✭quarryman

    1. Is there a way to change the site to English? My Russian isn't the best.

    2. Are these peer to peer or direct downloads? I'm behind a firewall.

EDIT: duh, i missed the english link in the top left corner.

    EDIT2: ok this site rocks.

I've used it before - its the shizzle. no DRM. Downloads always max out my 512k connection. And since the price is in US dollars (10$ per GB) it works out at about €8.50 for your gig of music.

I've been using this site a few months now, it really is the best. Cheap, legal and no DRM. Try out their AllOfMP3 Explorer utility, it's an excellent little download manager just for their site, supporting resumes, automatic downloads etc. Once you pick your songs and bitrate from the website they get added to the list and start coming down, it also has their catalog built in so you work completely within that. It works really well with proxies and firewalls too.

P.S. If anyone's having problems with V1.1, then V2 is out now.

easynews provides binary newsgroup access - very high retention and completion.
    Will work though http.
Very little that can be downloaded is legal.

Allofmp3 is a lovely site - huge selection and very affordable - thumbs up!

registered for easynews. how do i actually do a search for a song? i've selected a group and then done a search that way. i take it the number in brackets beside each group is the number of files in each? mp3 selection doesn't seem that great.

    http://members.easynews.com/global/ (Global Search)

You need an easynews account to access the page.

Tick the top one, tick the bottom one, click the ranges button (which will tick all the ones in between), and zip into one of the 6 queues. Go into zip manager, click the download button. Couldn't be much easier, to be honest.

The index is open to all, you can search yourself. You just won't be able to download it.

I've been using allofmp3.com for a while now, although only for music I already have on tape or damaged CD, or stuff I can't buy in the shops. I'll download the occasional single too, but if I like the music and there's a couple other good tracks on the album, I'll buy it on CD.

Pity they took down the music videos, that was totally cool. Got No Doubt's "Don't Speak" video though, something I'd been looking for for years!

Download at your own risk, but don't kid youself about it all being legal just because it looks official, works well and uses credit cards. Unless you are in russia, the legality of anything you download comes under the jurisdiction of the country in which the downloading takes place.

If it seems too good to be true then it probably is;)

You present that as a FACT, care to back it up with some evidence?

its very simple really. You use winrar to assemble whatever you have downlaoded. ie you donwload 20 files something.00, .01, .02...... .19 - open the directory where you saved them ALL in winrar and highlight a file and extract.

Do a search for a tutorial or something - its well worth it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,683 ✭✭✭daveg

Quarryman try this tutorial on newsgroups --> http://www.slyck.com/ng.php

Big files are split up into Rars and Pars. Say a file is split into 30 (rar) parts. You download all the files but find one of the parts is corrupt/missing. Any pars you download will rebuild the missing part. This method of posting is gold. You'll only appriciate this once you master newsgroups.

AFAIK under Irish law, once it's made publicly available then it's legal to download, it's only illegal to provide the material for download in the first place

I fail to see how this could be anymore illegal than buying from the likes of Amazon.Com or CD-WOW

What an amazing site. That little app is the business. Downloading merrily at >52 kB/sec.

    Happy days.

Amazing site, the explorer app can be a little unstable but downloading at around 50k and guaranteed quality and no DRM.

    Big tumbs up....

I've been using the site for 18 months or so. Excellent site, no problems. They had an offer on at Christmas giving a 10% on and payments ($5.00 got you $5.50 etc).

    Again what's DRM?

I think it's short for Digital Rights Management or something like that. In basic terms it means that when you download a song from iTunes for eg the serial number of your player gets embedded in the file so that only your player can then play it, if you send a copy to someone else their player will have a different serial number so it won't play. More importantly it means that if you download a song for your iPod or whatever that you can't also burn it to a cd for the car or wherever else you want to listen to it.

Again that's just a basic outline, check out Wikipedia for more info

I've being using AllOfMp3 for about 8 months or so - its is a GREAT site and I normally pay through Paypal because the oly negative things i can see on the web is people saying insecure with credit card - to me it looks like an honest site but PayPal just adds that extra security.

On a similar note there is another Russian website offering the same prices. Its quite good aswell, i seem to get faster downloads, however the site isnt as fancy, but some albums that I cant find on AllofMp3 are on MP3 Club

    Worth a look!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,678 ✭✭✭Selik

    I'm loving this site! :)

I've already spent nearly $25 so far which is peanuts for what I'm getting...

Quick question for anyone here who also uses the site - is it possible to determine how the filename will appear when it's downloaded? ie, I have all my tunes that are in albums like this: 05 Heart-Shaped Box

It's a bit of a hassle if you download alot of stuff like me but a small complaint nonetheless. Also is someone could recommend me some sort of tag/file renaming program OTHER than MP3tag Studio 3 I would be grateful. The reason I don't like that app (although it's sometimes useful) is because it's too damn confusing with all of the options and variations and whatnot, I'm just not arsed sitting down in front of the readme file for an hour or two. All I wanna do is rename filenames and tags in bulk and that's pretty much it!!!

So something fairly straightforward and simple would be cool... ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 415 ✭✭dec2000

If your using the explorer app from the website - there is somewhere you can specify what way the file is stored! Have a look around the app! If you are downloading directly from website I dont think you can change it

As for file renaming software - I use Tag & Rename - change filenames and tags! Also renames files using tag info which is great for allofmp3

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,678 ✭✭✭Selik

    Hmmm...

I've tried using that program (Allofmp3 Explorer) and to be honest I think it's rubbish. It only lets me download one song at a time and it started messing around with my folder directories as well. To boot it's also ALOT slower than what I normally use to download stuff (Download Accelerator Plus). To me it just looks like a poor man's Kazaa with only a sprinkling of the features... I want to be proved wrong though. Oh and there doesn't seem to be a seach option like on the website either which makes the whole thing kinda pointless (If I still have to logon to the site and do searches there).

Where can I get Tag and Rename for free?

    Kazaa perhaps?

Funny but since my last post on this I've actually used Mp3-Tag Studio alot more and to quite good effect... I must've read my own post and decided to give myself a hand! :p

Excellent website, big thumbs-up for allowing me to get an old Alabama 3 album :)

For those of us behind very very secure firewalls, this site is a god send. Spent almost 13 euros on a ton of albums.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 415 ✭✭dec2000

To be honest I dont like the allofmp3 explorer either - but as far as I can make out it is the only way to download songs with proper names.

I tend to download about 5 at a time and after an album use Tag & Rename to rename them! It only takes a minute!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,363 ✭✭✭chabsey

Has anyone used a credit card with this site? Any security concerns aside from the obvious ones that come into play whenever you use your credit card online.

Also, regarding the VIP stuff, am I right in assuming that there's only one way to download an album and that's by signing up as a VIP? I found the term VIP confusing as it implies some sort of higher level of privlidge, whereas it seems getting VIP is actually just the same as providing your credit card details and being able to DL music. I know there's free music available on the site too, is that what their making VIP access distinct from?

Edit: Final thing, they don't let you see how big a file will be in terms of encoding it before you sign up, which is annoying. I'd like to be able to know what I'm going to be able to get for my $10. It'd be nice if each album listed also displayed the file sizes when you changed encoding preferences. Maybe it does...I just can't find it on the site.
