Despite the rain, Armstrong's team clocked an average speed of 53.71 kilometers an hour, the third fastest time in the history of the event.

US Postal now occupy the top five places in the general classification.

    53.71 km/h = 33.37 mph

the weird thing with these new rules is that I don't see why Postal rode as hard as they must have done to win by 1.08 as they only gain 20 secs. Surely they could have eased off and conserved their energies

True enough... maybe they wanted to stamp their dominance on the GC. Trying for the record (which is not really worth that much), or they didn't get an order to back off?

Anyways, here's an article on AG2R, no mention of the boy.

Addendum: rider diary from Gilberto Simoni - he mentioned that "Postal used up a lot of energy today" and that would be good. He might be right....

... but that was yesterday! So they used up a lot of energy on S3, then blew away the opposition by so much on the TTT... I wonder if they will feel it tomorrow.

USP had 68 secs on the next team at the last checkpoint, putting around 40 secs into them from the previous checkpoint, but only finished 67 secs ahead, so they DID ease up.

Poor old Brad McGee, got dropped by his own team! He was the only one of the nine who finished alone, 4 mins in arrears [of his team].

The aforementioned Simoni (!) also suffered the same fate!!

Who felt it today then, Gilberto?
