SD Card transfer rates - hi-speed?

Just wondering if anyone has a 256MB or bigger SD card and notices much of a difference between a hi-speed and a standard. From what I understand the newer cards have an improved IO controller thus making for faster transfer rates. Anyone got concrete info on this?
