Someone with great faith in my computer expertise (hah!) has asked me how she should put a password on her Dell laptop. How? How? Anyone know?

If she's really paranoid, tell her to go into the BIOS (F2 on startup) and there's an option in there for both a hard drive password and a boot time password (depending on the model, both are probably there)

It is F2 for Dells yeah?

Thats a bit extreme scepter...wot OS is it ?

If its XP then go to start - settings - control panal - user accounts - create new user/or go to change an account and add the password there.

be careful if you are chaning the password on an XP user account if you are not logged in as that user as it may cause corruption to the users settings
user should always login and change the password themselves if possible

Depends on the data and circumstances.

Be very very careful about setting the hard drive password in the BIOS. If you forget it then you need to post the hard drive off to someone that can bypass the drives ATA circuitry. For lots of money.

Have seen suggestions that you could unlock the hard drive using some XBOX hack derived technique (atapwd) but never tried.

Stick to xp user passwords to keep out the kids.

Thanks very much; I'll tell her about the user accounts biz. I think it's her flat-sharer she wants to keep out, rather than kids, or maybe just protect her deathless prose when she's going to workshops.
