Important Bands

It's been said that Nirvana were the most important band of the ninties but I'd prefer to think there were other bands, maybe not as well known, who were more original, who invented genres, and who influenced people. Nirvana may have been the best known band of the time, but, over the course of musical history, there must have been bands who aren't nearly as recognized for what they did. Here'a thread where anyone here who thinks a band who have been hitherto ignored by the masses can pay homage to them. Please no slagging off bands others think are important, this is a purely personal thing but discussion is encouraged.

Its hard to find an influencial band who are not well known
but if you want bands that influenced metal in the 90s/00s
    Metallica
    Megadeth
    Judas Priest
    Iron Maiden
    Motorhead
    Manowar
    Slayer
    Zeppelin
    Emporer

    are all worth a mention

The Pixies were listed by Nirvana as one of their main influences. It could be said that they were one of the bands that really subtley influenced the world.

To an extent, the Stone Roses really heavily influenced the British music scene in the 90's. They were markedly different to any of the other music coming out of the UK in the late 80's, and were kind of a role model for an awful lot of other bands that followed them, such as The Happy Mondays, Supergrass, Oasis, Blur, Mansun, etc., etc.

I'd say Faith no more were one of the more influential bands of the nineties .... just a pity that most of the bands they influenced are a bit crap

Gary Numan has been a huge influence for metal and alternative stuff over the years, early Metallica definitely influenced people, but they in turn were influenced by people like Sabbath and Diamond Head and as mentioned before, Misfits.

Pornapster you really just mentioned your fav bands in the last 4 decades. There are very few real genre - breaking bands who really influenced others there.

    Death

side by side with Cynic, Watchtower and Atheist

    standing on the shoulders of

Celtic Frost, Venom, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and also Weather Report and Mahavishnu Orchestra

Although they sound terrible by todays standards, Venom really were a major influence on every thrash and death Metal band who followed. A huge influence in Metal, not to be underestimated.

    My Bloody Valentine
    At the Drive-In
    Radiohead
    Pixies
    Black Sabbath
    Jimi Hendrix

Also Nirvana are a hugely important band, even if you don’t like them there is no denying they inspired a whole generation to pick up the guitar no band has had such a huge following since, I’m sure the Darkness will replicate this.

im not mad on some of these bands but im likely to say
    Iron Maiden, Metallica, Nirvana,

i also think the likes of Opeth are becoming really influential now, you can really see a fan related influence, maybe too early to say if they've influenced music YET but i hope they will as theyre a nice not overdone sound like some new bands

i think we're all forgetting the mighty deUS... very influential band

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 424 ✭✭the_obsolete

Let's not forget Biohazard and Rage Against The Machine, who in the early ninties were pioneers in what would be called rap-metal...or rapcore. But of course nobody could beat the originals!
Korn had a big enough influence...ya can hear the same vocal mashing in people like Disturbed and *ick* Linkin Park.
Fear Factory weren't really influential, as nobody has ever come close to the kind of sound they have, with Burton's vocals, Raymonds god-like skills on the double bass pedals and Ryhs mastering and slapping in all the nice effects and string arrangements.
Punk had a huge influence on what would become Metal, with the angry angry lyrics and seriously fast paced songs...thank the Sex Pistols I say, while although not the best punk band ever, brought it to the fore.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

Yeah the Sex Pistols were a fairly mediocre band but the way they were so influential was because there was no way anyone could ignore them. They made punk really controversial. Punk definitely gave birth to metal somewhere along the way, though bands like Black Sabbath, who pioneered the early metal scene, don't really owe much loyalty to punk. Their music developed more out of circumstances than anything else.

The Ramones are probably the most influential band of the last 30 years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,375 ✭✭✭Antisocialiser

I would love to say ratm but although they were a genre - breaking band who really is alike to their sound thats worth mentioning.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

Anyone seen/heard of Acidtone? They're a young Irish metal band, basically a carbon copy of RATM, except without the insane guitar work. I've seen them in the Hub a few times and they're very much worth mentioning. I believe they played Donnington, and they're still in school. Definitely worth a look-in.

For extreme metal in general, Slayer were definitely influential, but bands like Venom, Death and so on are influential torwards the black and death scene.

But for hard rock and more mainstream metal, AC/DC, Led Zep, Sabbath, Judas Priest, Maiden and Metallica

The Melvins and Mudhoney were Nirvana's friends and contemporaries, rather than influences I think. Afaik, they were influenced mostly by the early 80's punk stuff, SST bands like the Meat Puppets,Husker Du, Black Flag etc. Oh and Mr.Cobain loved Alvin and The Chipmunks.

One of the most infleuntial bands ever would probably be Big Star.

hmm, for the 80's, not really a band, but Dave Mustaine, since he invented Speed Metal, then maybe stratovarius did the whole power metal thing, and tool/dream theater for progressive metal...

    The Fall

I suppose they count if he thinks they didn't get enough attention. :)

Mudhoney were more their peers of the time. Nirvana were inspired by the Melvins though, and majorly by the Pixies. Kurt had a chance to meet Charles Thompson at one stage but he was too shy.

well if where talking 90's here
Paradise Lost : Gothic, was a seriously important album , and also icon and shades of god.
Obituary : really gave death metal a good kick start.
Ministry : yea seriously influntal on the industrial side.

tbh i think music in the 90's was owned mainly by metal bands ( Anathema, Opeth, Manowar, Cradle of Filth, Old Mans Child etc, all these bands ruled there was little else interesting going on in other music scenes, apart from like ry cooder and some other exceptions, but for a music scene it was metal, and possibly some techno type stuff like aphex twin, amon tobin etc.
