Before I do something stupid, I thought I should check here...

Glasgow airport isn't the same as Glasgow Prestwick airport, is that right??

And does anybody know how easy it is to get from one to the other? Is there a bus service? Are they even close? Would a taxi be expensive?

They are two seperate airports. Prestwick is 40 minutes frrom Glasgow by rail. You can then get a bus from Glasgow Central to Glasgow Airport

    www.baa.com/main/airports/glasgow (Glasgow Airport site)

    www.gpia.co.uk/AirportInfo/HowTo/ByTrain.asp (Prestwick)

    Cheers, just found that out.

For anyone who knows the area, does this sound ok? I'm flying to Prestwick, and then I've to make my way to Glasgow International for a flight to Canada.

Arrive at Prestwick, apparently the train station is right beside the airport.
Get the train to Paisley (the nearest train station to Glasgow International according to their website) and then I've 2 miles to make by bus or taxi to the airport.

Does that sound the best way? Time isn't an issue, as I've about 10 hours to kill between flights.

    sounds right: look at

    http://www.visitscotland.com/library/prestwickairport for full details

If i had 10 hours between flights, I would go into the city for a meal and a walk around. dont know what Glasgow city centre is like but its got to be better than 7 hours sitting in airports.

I probably would do that too, but it's overnight and I don't fancy walking around Glasgow at night with a suitcase.

Anyway, I work nights in Dublin airport, so I'm used to the mind numbing, soul crushing experience already ;)

    Shouldn't be a problem.

If you're flying Ryanair to Prestwick, I believe the train is free.

Where'd you hear this? It's only a fiver anyway so not a big deal.

It's on the Ryanair website. Think you need to get a printout of your itinerary aswell.

Found it there. It's 50% off once you present your invoice. Might take up that offer.

I have travelled in on the train from Prestwick to Glasgow a good few times and only once has a conductor come around looking for tickets. Just bought one from him for about a fiver.

Glasgow Central is as the name suggests bang in the middle of Glasgow. There are plenty of restaraunts around if you fancy something to eat. That part of Glasgow is very safe. A lot of shops and offices.

Prestwick Airport is near Ayr, and is about an hour away from Glasgow on the train. Trains are regular - every ten or fifteen minutes.

Glasgow Airport is in Paisley, about ten minutes drive from Glasgow on the motorway. Avoid the white taxis outside the arrivals - hiring a limo would be cheaper. You can get a bus into Glasgow from just outside the airport, or a bus to Paisley (which is full of junkie scum) from where you can get a train to Glasgow.

Sorry, just read the second bit. Jump on the Glasgow Central train at Prestwick and get off at Paisley Gilmour street (NOT Paisley St. James!). Go out of the train station onto Sneddon Street and there's a bus stop for the Glasgow airport just outside the door...

How regular does that bus run to Glasgow airport? It'll be almost midnight when I get to Paisley, will it still be running then? And how much would it cost?

I don't think you'd get an airport bus that late, but there is a taxi rank around the front of the station. The airport is about three miles away, so a taxi should only be 4 or 5 quid.

Don't say us weedgies arn't good to you sonny jim.

Heres a link for the airport bus, you'd be getting the bus from St Vincent St, which is right outside the main entrance to Central Station, on the left hand side. The last ones at midnight from the Bus Station so about 5mins after by the time it gets to the train station.

    http://www.citylink.co.uk/times_glas2airp.htm

Heres also the link to the timetable for the trains from prestwick, train is the only real option from Prestwick at the min, just head straight over the walkway once your into the main hall and the far platform, from you, will be the trains for Glasgow.

    http://www.scotrail.co.uk/airports.htm

Tickets are 50% cheaper with your itinery, £2 if I remem. It'll take the best part of 45mins to get to Central Station, I wouln't recommend a midnight sojourn into paisley, it can get a bit wild westish. Walk straight through the main concourse and leave via the exit opposite the platforms, ie straight ahead of you when you get off the train. Turn immediatly to your left when you get out and you'll see the bustop for the airport bus. Shortly after that a little minibus with 50% travellers and 50% steamers headin home will arrive, jump on and its roughly £4 single to the airport. If you miss the last one the taxi ranks right across the road.

Couldn't be easier. Oh you might get a couple of nuggets asking you for "£1furmabusfarehamemate" when using our beautiful countries transportation system but dont worry about it to much, just nod and look sympathetic. Check out

    www.glasgowsurvival.co.uk

for a more in depth guide.

    Enjoy

    Chris

Cheers for that. I'll be writing those directions down.
That looks better. Now that I know how close the train station is to the airport at Prestwick, I'll probably be able to catch the 22:20 train and arrive at Glasgow Central around 23:10, which gives me plenty of time to catch the airport bus.

    Thanks again for that mate!
